Bracket (PDF format)
CARSON, Calif.-The 2000 NCAA II National
Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team will begin
defense of their national crown this weekend on Saturday, November
10 when they host Cal State Bakersfield in the opening round of
the NCAA Championship Playoffs. The pairing was announced by the
NCAA Championship Committee earlier today.
The first round matchup will feature the
three-time defending California Collegiate Athletic Association
Champion Toros who captured the 2001 CCAA Crown with a 1-0 win
over UC Davis yesterday in San Diego. Their opponent, Cal State
Bakersfield, finished second to CSUDH in the CCAA Central
Division, but failed to qualify for the conference tournament this
past weekend at UC San Diego. The Roadrunners will enter the NCAA
playoffs with a 12-8 overall record and a 9-5 mark in league play.
"We're really excited to host
again," said head CSUDH coach Joe Flanagan. "I can't
think of two teams that know each other any better than us and
Bakersfield."
The Toros and Roadrunners have faced each other
twice this season with CSUDH winning in Carson 3-0 and suffering
their first and only conference loss of the year in Bakersfield
0-1.
"Hopefully, our experience will
give us an edge," continues Flanagan. "I think there
will be a little bit of a revenge factor in this game as
Bakersfield was the only CCAA team to beat us this year. It should
be a good one."
Saturday's game against Cal State Bakersfield
is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start. The winner of this weekend's
first-round NCAA playoff game will play the winner of the Midwest
Regional between Fort Lewis University (CO) and West Texas A&M
University on November 17 or 18 at a site yet to be announced.
