2001 Results 2001 Roster

THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Nov. 7 #18 CSUDH vs. #9 Cal Poly Pomona Kellogg Field, 5:30 pm

WHAT'S AT STAKE: The winner of Wednesday night's game will travel on Saturday to take on No. 1 seed and defending NCAA II National Champion UC San Diego beginning at 5:30 p.m. for the Far West Region Championship.

BRONCOS BUCK TOROS IN CCAA SEMIFINAL: Cal Poly Pomona scored a pair of second half goals to beat rival Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0 in the first semifinal of the 2001 California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship. A typical defensive struggle between two of the stingiest squads in the country swayed in Poly's favor midway through the second half when freshman defender Deirdre Sweeney scored off a touch pass from forward Michelle McConnell following a corner kick in the 62nd minute. Lisa Hermen added an insurance goal four and a half minutes later when she arched a shot into the upper right corner well out of the grasp of CSUDH goalie Heather Williams (Canyon HS). CPP out-shot the Toros 16-9 in the match.

SO WE MEET AGAIN: The Toros will face a familiar adversary when they take on the Broncos Wednesday night. CSUDH looks to avenge their 2-0 loss to Pomona last Friday in La Jolla. These two teams have squared off several times in the not so distant past in what has become one of the best rivalries in the league. CSUDH owns the all-time series advantage with a 22-10-5 mark. However, the Toros have not beaten CPP since 1999 when they took a regular season battle 2-0 here in Carson. Since then, the Broncos have won four of the last five match-ups including a quadruple overtime win for the CCAA Championship game and advancing on penalty kicks in the Far West Regional Championship in back-to-back games in 1999.

LEADING THE CHARGE: CSUDH is now 15-4-1 overall and ranked No. 18 in this week's NSCAA polls. Junior forward Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) leads four players scoring in double figures with 38 points on 14 goals and 10 assists. Sophomore forward Tanya Wilson (Palm Springs HS) follows with 26 points (11g, 4a) then comes junior forward Shannon Donnelly with 21 points (5g, 11a). Freshman defender Sanoe Samatua (N. Torrance HS) closes out the foursome with 12 points (5g, 2a). Williams leads the Central Division with a 0.75 GAA in the net and an 11-2-1 record in 15 games.

FOUR PLAYERS EARN ALL-CCAA HONORS: Four players were named to the All-CCAA teams this past weekend. Forward's Dianne Garza and Tanya Wilson were selected to the First Team All-CCAA squad while goalie Heather Williams and defender Sanoe Samatua were tabbed to the Second Team.

THE BRONCO BUCK: Cal Poly Pomona is in a 3-way tie for the No. 9 ranking in the latest NSCAA polls with a 15-3-2 record. Michelle McConnell leads Pomona with 26 points (11g, 4a). Four others are in double figures led by Lisa Araujo with 18 points. Lisa Hermen and Carrie Anderson follow with 11 points each while Deirdre Sweeney rounds out the group with 10 points. Katie Kreps has been impressive in goal compiling a 0.52 goals against average and 11 shutouts in 20 starts.
