Toros Women's Soccer Season Comes to a Close with 2-1 NCAA Regional Loss at Pomona
November 7, 2001

POMONA, Calif- The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer season came to a close tonight after the team suffered a 2-1 loss at Cal Poly Pomona during the first round of the NCAA II playoffs at Kellogg Field.

CSUDH found themselves down early this evening when Pomona got on the board in the 3rd minute of play. At 3:50, Lisa Araujo collected a loose ball in a made scramble off a corner kick and slipped her shot to the far post making it 1-0.

The score would remain the same until the Toros tallied the equalizer in the second half. At the 70:04 minute mark, freshman defender Sanoe Samatua (N. Torrance HS) tossed in a long ball that was played by junior forward Dianne Garza (Temple City HS). Garza crossed her shot near the end line finding the feet of junior sophomore forward Tanya Wilson (Palm Springs HS) who tapped her shot to the far post making it 1-1.

But Cal Poly Pomona would go ahead on a questionable call twelve minutes later. Senior CSUDH goalie Heather Williams (Canyon HS) went in the air to gather a pass but was bumped in the air outside the mouth of the goal causing her to fumble the ball. No foul was called and Lena Ramirez was there to knock the ball in from close-range accounting for the final 2-1 margin.

The Toros came out early flat, however, controlled much of the tempo in the game. CSUDH outshot the Broncos 8-5 but it was all for naught as the Toros finish with a 15-5-1 record overall. Cal Poly advances on Saturday to La Jolla to take on UC San Diego in the NCAA II Far West Region Championship Game.

Four Cal State Dominguez Hills seniors played in their final game in a Toros uniform. Midfielder Kristie McMahan, defenders Griselda Ramirez and Jill Toda along with goalkeeper Heather Williams closed out their collegiate careers tonight at Kellogg Field.
