CARSON, Calif.-It was announced today by the
NCAA that the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team will
travel to Canyon, Texas to take on West Texas A&M in the 2001
NCAA II Men's Soccer NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday, November 18.
Kick-off is slated for 1:00 CST.
The quarterfinal matchup will feature Midwest
Region champion West Texas A&M and Far West Region champion
Cal State Dominguez Hills. WTAMU defeated Fort Lewis (CO) 4-0 last
Sunday to advance while CSUDH beat Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 here
in Carson last Saturday.
Last year, these two squads battled in Carson
in the NCAA quarterfinals with the Toros advancing with a 2-0
shutout. It shouldn't be difficult for the Buffs to get motivated
for this weekend's game as they look to avenge that loss. But
CSUDH head coach Joe Flanagan thinks that the Toros squad is up to
the task.
"Our guys are looking forward to
travelling and playing on their field," states Flanagan. "We
know they are going to be gunning for us, just like everyone else
has this year. But they might have a little bit more of an
incentive since we knocked them out of the playoffs last year."
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 4 in the
NSCAA polls with an 18-2-1 record, will be facing West Texas A&M
for the fourth time all-time with the Buffs holding a 2-1 series
advantage. The Toros will be looking to even up the series record
but know it won't be easy.
"Butch Lauffer (WTAMU head coach)
has put together another fine season," says Flanagan. "They
had a good result against a strong Fort Lewis team last weekend
and are playing good soccer at this point."
WTAMU is now 15-3-1 on the season.
The winner of this weekend's quarterfinal will
advance to the elite NCAA Division II Championship on November 29
- December 1, at a site yet to be determined.
