CHICO, Calif.--Chico State outscored the Toros
by 12 points in the second period to cruise to a 64-52 CCAA
opening win tonight over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Acker
Gymnasium in Chico, CA.
After battling to a 22-22 tie at the half,
Chico began the second stanza with a 10-4 run to take a lead they
would never relinquish. Fercia Rambacal's (Mark Keppel HS) trey
with 14:03 remaining would trim the Chico lead to 36-31 but that
was as close as the Toros would get. Chico State (5-0, 1-0 CCAA)
would go on a 15-4 run in the final five minutes to go on for the
conference win.
CSUDH (1-3, 0-1 CCAA) would only committ 14
turnovers in the game, but it was their cold shooting which would
spell defeat on the night. The Toros managed only to make 29% of
their shots in the game (19-64) while Chico shot .489 from the
field.
Senior guard Tracee Lewis (St. Bernard HS) led
the Toros in the losing effort with 16 points. Rambacal chipped in
with nine points on the night. Nakeisha Perkins and Christina
Tucker would lead the team defensively with eight boards each.
Kara Scheitlin paced the Wildcat attack with 18
points off the bench. Jennifer Kern poured in 17 points while
Rexanne Simpton knocked in 15 points. Kern also pulled down a
team-high eight rebounds.
CSUDH is back in conference action tomorrow
night at UC Davis. First tip in Recreation Hall is slated for 6
pm.
