CARSON, Calif.- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
women's basketball team ended a four-game losing streak, posting a
58-51 non-conference win over the visiting Hawks of Christian
Heritage.
The last time that the Toros tasted victory was
on November 23, when they notched a win over Southern Colorado
University at home.
The first half was an even battle. It got off
to a slow start after the tip, with a total of only ten points
being scored in the first five minutes of play. Christian Heritage
stepped up after that point, taking a 11-4 lead off baskets by
Andrea Hamilton and Karen Relph.
The Toros looked to Tracee Lewis (St. Bernard's
HS) at that point, and the senior guard nailed a three-pointer to
cut the lead to four. It was the first of her three treys in the
half. She drained one at 2:46 to tie the game at 20, and her final
one at seven seconds remaining to take the Toros into the locker
room with a 25-24 lead. Lewis had a half-high nine points to lead
all players.
The second half was a different story, with the
momentum belonging to CSUDH. The Toros broke out of an 37-38
stalemate at the ten-minute mark, and never gave up the lead after
that. They sealed their victory with their biggest lead of the
game at 10 with 7 seconds remaining, on two made free throws by
Lewis.
The story of the night however, was the play by
junior forward Nakeisha Perkins (Grant HS). Perkins had a
double-double on the night with ten points and ten boards. It was
the first double-double by any Toro this season.
As a team, CSUDH was 25-61 (41%) from the
field, 4-18 (22%) from behind the arc and 4-10 (40%) from the
charity stripe.
Lewis scored a team-high and tied a game-high
13 points, including three baskets from downtown. Perkins poured
in ten, grabbing a game-high ten rebounds.
The Hawks were 17-40 (42.5%) from the field,
2-8 (20%) from downtown, and 15-26 (57%) from the free throw line.
Andrea Hamilton and Jennifer Gray dumped in a
13 points apiece to tie CSUDH's Lewis for game-high points. The
Hawks had three players, Hamilton, Relph and Gray, score in
double-figures.
The Toros moved to 2-6 overall. They return to
CCAA action next weekend when they host Grand Canyon University on
Friday and UC San Diego on Saturday. First tip in each game is
slated for 5:30 p.m. |
