Toros Drop Eighth Straight with 72-66 Loss to Grand Canyon
January 4, 2002

CARSON, Calif.-The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's team just can't shake the monkey off their back as they lost their eighth straight game tonight with a 72-66 loss to Grand Canyon University in California Collegiate Athletic Association action tonight in the Torodome.

Down by ten points 25-15 with 5:21 remaining in the first half, CSUDH (1-9, 0-5 CCAA) went on a 13-4 run to cut the lead GCU lead to one point 29-28 at the intermission. Senior point guard Jacob Poole (Mt. Carmel HS) registered six of the points during the late first period run.

The Toros opened the second half on an 8-3 run to take their first and only lead of the game at 17:27 on a basket by junior forward Justin Goree (Fairfield HS). But Grand Canyon (4-6, 2-3 CCAA) would answer with a 13-4 run building their lead to seven points 47-40 with 12:12 left in the game. CSUDH would trim the lead to two points three times in the final ten minutes, but could not knock down the crucial basket each of those three times.

Del Somers led three Grand Canyon players in double figures with 19 points. Sean Harris poured in 14 points while Arthur Daniels chipped in 11. Daniels paced the Antelopes on the glass with eight rebounds.

Senior center Kevin Blunt (Pacific HS) registered his second double-double of the season with a team-high 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Earl Rowland (Palma HS) knocked in 16 points including going 4-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. Jacob Poole poured in 14 points and dished out a game-high eight assists. Justin Goree was also in double figures with 10 points on the night.

CSUDH is back in CCAA action tomorrow night when they host UC San Diego. First tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
