LOS ANGELES -- Four Golden Eagles scored in
double figures, led by Jurate Orinaite's 20 points and 10
rebounds, as Cal State L.A. (7-9, 6-5 CCAA) used an early second
half run to knock off Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-10, 3-8 CCAA)
on Wednesday night in the Eagles Nest, 70-50.
Cal State L.A. never trailed in the game,
opening the contest with a three-pointer by Kelli Kobayashi just
eight seconds into the game. The CSLA lead reached as much as 14
points at 22-8 on a pair of Orinaite free throws with 9:48 left
until halftime.
CSUDH rallied late in the period, going on a
12-2 run to close the gap to 32-30 after a Fercia Rambacal free
throw with 2:08 left in the period. CSLA would take a 36-30 lead
into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half on a
15-0 run, holding Cal State Dominguez Hills scoreless for the
first 6:34 of the period. The lead reached 21 points at the end of
that run as Kobayashi's jumper gave CSLA a 51-30 edge with 13:43
left in the game.
The Toros finally broke the scoreless streak
with a Tracee Lewis jumper at the 13:16 mark of the second half.
CSLA would take as much as a 24-point edge on two occasions late
in the game, eventually winning by 20 points at 70-50.
The Toros were paced by Lewis' 16 points while
Nakeisha Perkins added nine boards for CSUDH. As a team, Cal State
L.A. held a substantial 54-34 edge on the boards.
Orinaite led all scorers with her 20 points to
go along with 10 boards. Darlene Nunez also tied for game-high
rebounding honors with 10 in addition to 14 points. Monica Tokoro
(11 points, 5 assists) and Kobayashi (10 points, 5 rebounds, 4
assists) also scored in double figures for Cal State L.A.
The two teams meet again on Saturday night in
the second half of the home-and-home series. Tipoffs at CSUDH are
slated for 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men).
