CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills got a
career-high 30 points from Jacob Poole to post their first-ever
win over UC Davis 76-70 in California Collegiate Athletic
Association tonight in the Torodome. Coming into tonight's
contest, UC Davis had won the first 10 meetings dating back to the
1984-85 season.
CSUDH (6-12, 5-8 CCAA) came out hot shooting
58% in the first half to take a 10-point lead into the
intermission. In the first period, the game was tied 17-17 at
10:48 before the Toros went on a 18-6 run to take a 12-point lead
35-23 with 2:33 left in the first half. After a Davis 3-point
basket by Justin Stearns and a free throw by Tyler Boyd, both
teams would trade baskets over the final 1:59 to close out the
half.
UC Davis (10-8, 7-6 CCAA) opened the second
period on a 19-5 run to forge their first lead of the game 48-44
with 14:17 remaining. In the run, the Aggies took their first lead
on a three-pointer by Dominic Callori at 14:43 then took a
four-point lead in the next possession on a 3-point basket by
Tyler Boyd. CSUDH's Brandon Erquhart tied the game 48-48 at 13:28
then took the lead for good on a layup by Jacob Poole at 13:07
making it 50-48.
The Toros defense held Davis scoreless over the
next 6:40 going on a 16-0 run capped by a free throw by Poole at
8:46 making it 60-48. In that stretch, Poole scored six of the
Toros 16 points. UC Davis would trim the lead to five points in
the final minute but that was as close as the Aggies would get as
CSUDH would convert on 13-15 from the charity stripe over the
final six minutes of the game.
Poole erupted for a career-high 30 points, 20
of them coming in the second half. For the game, Poole shot 11-18
from the floor in 37 minutes of play. Michael Crawford chipped in
with 15 points on 6-8 from the field. Lamar Lawrence came off the
bench to pull down a game-high nine rebounds on the night.
UC Davis was led by Dominic Callori and Tyler
Boyd with 17 points each. Patrick McDuffie knocked in 12 while
Brent Wyse came off the bench to add 10 points. Jess McElree
pulled down a team-high eight boards.
The Toros, who have won three in a row for the
first time since the 1998-99 season, will host Chico State
tomorrow night in the Torodome beginning at 7:30 p.m.
