WHAT'S ON TAP: CSUDH enters the week
with a 7-12 overall record and a 6-8 mark in CCAA play. The Toros
are riding a four-game winning streak with victories over UC Davis
and Chico State this past weekend. CSUDH will host Cal Poly Pomona
and Cal State San Bernardino this weekend.
TOROS PULL OFF OVERTIME VICTORY OVER CHICO
STATE: Cal State Dominguez Hills got a career-high 30 points
from Jacob Poole for the second night in a row as the senior guard
led the Toros to an 89-86 overtime CCAA conference victory over
Chico State Saturday night in the Torodome. The win gives CSUDH
their first 4-game win streak since the 1995-96 season. Chico
State took a two-point lead into the intermission 49-47 shooting a
blazing 66% from the field. The Toros tied the game 49-49 with the
first basket of the second half but the Wildcats would begin a 9-2
run taking a 58-51 lead with 17:03 left in regulation. Over the
next three minutes, CSUDH would trim the lead to 58-57 on a layup
by Ernie Burries with 14:41 remaining. Both teams would trade
baskets over the next nine minutes before the Toros took the lead
71-70 on a 3-point basket by Justin Goree with 5:57 on the clock.
After a free throw by Kevin Blunt and another 3-pointer from Goree
gave the Toros a four point lead at 2:15, the Wildcat defense
would hold Cal State Dominguez Hills to one point over the final
2+ minutes. With an 80-77 CSUDH lead and 4.8 seconds left, Chico's
Ben Perak ran the distance of the court and nailed a 3-pointer at
the buzzer to send the game into overtime. In the extra period,
Blunt got a put-back on an offensive rebound to give the Toros an
82-80 lead at 3:36. Jon Henderson gave Chico the lead for the last
time 85-84 on an 8-foot jumper with 2:03 on the clock. With :23
second left, Jacob Poole was fouled and converted both of this
charity shots to give CSUDH the lead for good 86-85. In Chico's
next possession, Poole would steal the ball at midcourt and was
fouled sending him to the line where he converted both free throws
with :12-seconds remaining to seal the win. Poole led everyone
with a game-high 30 points and 9 assists. It was the second night
in a row that the senior guard scored 30 points after pouring in
30 on Friday in the Toros 76-70 win over UC Davis. Freshman Earl
Rowland came off the bench to score 19 points on 8-16 shooting
from the floor. Blunt came close to a double-double with 17 points
and a game-high 9 rebounds. Justin Goree chipped in with 12 points
while hitting two crucial three-point baskets in the game for the
Toros.
POOLE LEADS TOROS TO FIRST EVER WIN OVER UC
DAVIS: CSUDH got a career-high 30 points from Jacob Poole to
post their first-ever win over UC Davis 76-70 in CCAA action on
Friday night in the Torodome. UC Davis had won the first 10
meetings dating back to the 1984-85 season. CSUDH came out hot
shooting 58% in the first half to take a 10-point lead into the
intermission. In the first period, the game was tied 17-17 at
10:48 before the Toros went on a 18-6 run to take a 12-point lead
35-23 with 2:33 left in the first half. UC Davis opened the second
period on a 19-5 run to forge their first lead of the game 48-44
with 14:17 remaining. In the run, the Aggies took their first lead
on a three-pointer by Dominic Callori at 14:43 then took a
four-point lead in the next possession on a 3-point basket by
Tyler Boyd. CSUDH's Brandon Erquhart tied the game 48-48 at 13:28
then took the lead for good on a layup by Jacob Poole at 13:07
making it 50-48. The Toros defense held Davis scoreless over the
next 6:40 going on a 16-0 run capped by a free throw by Poole at
8:46 making it 60-48. In that stretch, Poole scored six of the
Toros 16 points. UC Davis would trim the lead to five points in
the final minute but that was as close as the Aggies would get as
CSUDH would convert on 13-15 from the charity stripe over the
final six minutes of the game. Poole erupted for a career-high 30
points, 20 of them coming in the second half. For the game, Poole
shot 11-18 from the floor in 37 minutes of play. Michael Crawford
chipped in with 15 points on 6-8 from the field. Lamar Lawrence
came off the bench to pull down a game-high nine rebounds on the
night.
POOLE GARNERS PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
AGAIN: For the second consecutive week, Jacob Poole has been
named the Rawlings California Collegiate Athletic Association
Men's Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the league
office today for the week of Jan. 28 - Feb. 3. Poole, a 5-9 senior
from San Diego, earned the award after leading the Toros to their
third and fourth straight win with a precedent-setting weekend. He
scored a game-high 30 points on 61 percent shooting and added 3
rebounds and 2 assists to lead the Toros to a 76-70 win over UC
Davis. Poole sparked a 16-0 second-half run with six points that
erased a four-point deficit and the Toros went on to defeat UCD
for the first time in the 12-game series' history dating back to
1984. The following night, Poole again scored a game-high 30
points to lead CSUDH to a thrilling 89-86 overtime win over Chico
State. The back-to-back 30-point performances was a first-ever
accomplishment for a Cal State Dominguez Hills player. Poole added
a game-high 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. For the week, he
averaged 30 points on 49 percent shooting overall (22-45) and 87
percent free throw shooting (13-15). Poole also averaged 5.5
assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
SCOUTING CAL POLY POMONA: Cal Poly
enters the week in third place in the CCAA with a 10-4 league mark
and a 13-6 overall record. The Broncos are coming off a sweep this
weekend with wins over Cal State Bakersfield (70-65) and CS
Stanislaus (86-57). Senior guard Lucas LeCour leads a trio of
players scoring in double figures with 13.8 ppg. Freshman Jeff
Bonds follows with 11.9 ppg and leads the Broncos on the boards
grabbing 5.3 rpg. Senior Raymond Hubbard is pouring in 11.0 ppg
and is second on the squad with 5.0 rpg.
ABOUT CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO: The
Coyotes enter the week atop the CCAA standings with a 13-1
conference record and an 18-1 overall mark. CSUSB is now ranked
No. 4 in the latest NCAA II polls. CSUSB was upset this past
weekend by Cal State Bakersfield (60-62) and posted a win over Cal
State Stanislaus (76-52). San Bernardino is led by senior forward
Glenn Summerall who is averaging 13.9 ppg. Junior forward Bobby
Burries follows with 13.8 ppg while James Taylor is also in double
figures with 10.6 ppg. Seniors Tellys Knight and LeRoy Mayo pace
the team defensively with 4.5 rpg.
LEADING THE TOROS: Senior point guard
Jacob Poole leads a quartet of CSUDH players in double figures
averaging 20.3 ppg. Poole also paces the squad with 35 steals and
dishing out a team-best 5.1 assists per game. Kevin Blunt is
second on the team averaging 16.3 ppg and leads the team in
rebounding grabbing 8.1 rpg. Freshman Earl Rowland is scoring at a
10.7 ppg clip while junior forward Michael Crawford is knocking in
10.5 ppg. As a team, the Toros are shooting .446 from the field
while holding their opponents to .430 from the floor.
TOROS ON A ROLL: The Toros have won
four straight games after sweeping CCAA schools UC Davis and Chico
State this past weekend. It is the first 4-game win streak for
coach Larry Hauser and the first since former mentor Dave Yanai
was guiding the program during the 1995-96 season.
TOROS MATCH 2000-01 MARK: With eight
games left in the season, the Toros have already posted as many
victories as last year's team. In 2000-01, CSUDH finished with a
7-19 overall record and 6-16 mark in CCAA play. Currently, the
Toros are 7-12 overall and 6-8 in league play.

HEAD COACH LARRY HAUSER Coach Hauser
begins his fifth season on the sidelines for Cal State Dominguez
Hills. Hauser has compiled a 34-70 career record in four seasons
on the Carson campus. During his first campaign in the 1997-98
season, Hauser led the Toros to a second place league finish.
