THE TOROS LAST TIME OUT
UC Davis def. Cal State Dominguez Hills
65-62 Not only was the Cal state Dominguez Hills women's
basketball team looking to stop a four game losing streak Friday
night, they were also looking to erase the memory of last Saturday
night's 74-75 loss to crosstown rival Cal State LA. They could do
neither. And this time, there was more of a sting, as they loss to
UCD 62-65. UC Davis was leading almost the entire first half. But
the determined Toros stayed close, shooting well from the floor at
45%. With eight ticks left in the first 20, Monique Marquez
stepped up big and nailed one from downtown, to give the Toros a
three point lead going into the locker room. The game was tied at
60 apiece with 36 ticks remaining, until Aggie Janae Henning
converted from the line to bring UCD ahead by two. With time
winding down, senior Fercia Rambacal took the ball into the middle
and came up with two to tie the game at 62 with 8 seconds left.
UCD took possession and quickly moved the ball down the court,
with no time remaining Shea Purkiss was wide open and nailed a
three pointer to give the Aggies a 65-62 win and the Toros their
fifth straight loss in the CCAA. The Toros had a strong showing
from Monique Marquez who was a perfect three of three from
downtown and poured in a team-leading 13 points. Adrianna Mendez
was another bright spot Friday. The guard dumped in 11 points,
while Lewis finished out the three Toros scoring in double figures
with 10.
Chico State def. Cal State Dominguez Hills
49-67 The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team
was looking to end their longest losing streak of the season
Saturday. After a surge in the closing minutes of the first half,
the Toros squeaked out a 27-26 halftime lead, but they could not
hold on and dropped the contest 49-67.The first half looked all
Chico State, as the Wildcats scored the first six points in the
first half. In fact, the Toros were held scoreless until junior
post Muñeca Bush put one in, to put CSUDH on the board. The
Wildcats led the entire first half, and enjoyed their largest lead
of the half with 6:52 remaining when they were ahead by eight.
After that mark, however the Toros picked up their game, going on
a 19-10 run.The second half was a different story. The Wildcats
picked up their shooting, connecting on 44% of their shots. They
also dominated the boards, outrebounding the Toros 23-15. There
were three lead changes in the second half, with the Wildcats
taking what would be the winning lead of 21 with 2:21 remaining.
Adrianna Mendez came on strong for the Toros in the second. After
being held to four in the first half, the forward stepped up and
scored a team-leading seven in the second. Tracee Lewis, who
scored five points for the Toros in the first half, was unable to
score in the second, finishing with five on the night. The Toros
were led by Bush, who tallied 13 points, and pulled down nine
boards. Mendez added 11, to round out the top CSUDH scorers.
TOROS NOTES
- MARQUEZ LEADING TEAM FROM LONG RANGE
Sophomore Monique Marquez has been on fire from downtown.
The 5-5 guard has connected on 14 of 38 shots from behind the
arc. In the thrilling loss to UCD, Marquez was a perfect 3 of 3
from downtown and finished the game with a team-high and
season-best 13 points.
- MENDEZ HAS SEASON-BEST WEEKEND
Sophomore Adrianna Mendez had a season-best weekend last
weekend. The guard had two identical 11 point nights in losses
to UC Davis and Chico State. Mendez started both contests and
averaged 27 minutes per game. In the UC Davis game, she was 4 of
10 from the floor, including one from long range. In Saturday's
matchup versus Chico State, Mendez was 4 of 11 from the field
and 3 of 5 from the charity stripe.
- THREE TOROS SCORING IN THE CENTURY MARK
Three Toros have put scored in the 100 point range on the
season. Seniors Fercia Rambacal and Christina Tucker have scored
167 and 103 points on the season, respectively, while junior
Kendra Tease has dumped in 167. LEWIS IS OVER 200 After scoring
27 points in the last three games, senior Tracee Lewis has
brought her season scoring total over the 200 mark to 223
points. The guard is averaging 12.4 points per game.
- TOROS FORCING TURNOVERS The Cal
State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team is forcing
turnovers. The Toros are forcing opponents to give up the ball
22.5 times per game. CSUDH is holding onto to the ball though,
only giving the ball up 20.1 times per game. On the season, the
Toros have posted 182 steals and are averaging 10.1 steals per
game.
- PERKINS PULLS DOWN 100 Junior center
Nakeisha Perkins has hit the century mark in rebounds. Perkins
pulled down seven rebounds on the weekend to bring her season
total to 100 exactly. She is averaging a team-leading 7. 1boards
per game. But look out for senior Christina Tucker who is on
Perkins heels in the rebounding game. Perkins needs just six
more rebounds to hit the century mark and since she is averaging
6.7 points per game, look for her to do so in this Wednesday's
matchup at Cal State LA.
- TOROS FORCING TURNOVERS Cal State
Dominguez Hills is forcing turnovers. The Toros have forced 317
turnovers on the season, including stealing the ball away 134
times. CSUDH is turning the ball over 19.6 times per game,
compared to their opponents who are giving the ball away 22.6
times per contest.
