CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills was
eyeing an upset over No. 10 Cal State Bakersfield, but it never
materialized as the Roadrunners went wire-to-wire in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association win tonight in the
Torodome 80-66.
CSUB (23-3, 18-3 CCAA) jumped out to a 15-point
lead nine minutes into the game 26-11 after a running jumper at
11:19 by Ramel Curry. The Toros answered and cut the lead to seven
points 30-23 at 5:27 after a 12-4 CSUDH run. Bakersfield would
close out the half on a 7-4 run to go into the break with a
10-point lead 37-27.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (11-15, 10-11 CCAA)
knocked in the first basket of the second half, cutting the lead
to eight points, but the 'Runners would take control after that
building a 15-point lead over the next six minutes.
The Toros would not get closer than 13 points
the rest of the way as Bakersfield would lead by as many as 26
points with 5:31 remaining. CSUDH went on a 11-0 run in the next
three minutes and cut the lead to 76-61 with 2:23 left, but would
get no closer as CS Bakersfield would go on for the 80-66 win.
Cal State Bakersfield was led by Ramel Curry's
24 points while Dock Ellis had a double-double with 19 points and
15 rebounds. Brad Fields also had 10 points for the Roadrunners.
For Cal State Dominguez Hills, Jacob Poole
poured in 21 points, 16 of them in the second half, while senior
center Kevin Blunt chipped in with 12 points. Michael Crawford
came off the bench to score 12 points. Sophomore forward Lamar
Lawrence pulled down a team-high eight boards.
CSUDH will close out the season tomorrow night
hosting Cal State Stanislaus. First tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
