CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills
(12-15, 11-11 CCAA) closed out the 2001-02 men's basketball season
on a positive note with an 82-63 California Collegiate Athletic
Association victory over visiting Cal State Stanislaus tonight in
the Torodome. Guard Jacob Poole just missed a triple-double with
21 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists on the night to lead CSUDH.
Stanislaus came out strong to open the game
opening a 10-point lead in the first five minutes. Jeff
Davenport's layup at 14:58 capped an 8-0 spurt giving the Warriors
a 13-3 lead. But the Toros answered back with a 15-5 run to tie
the game 18-18 with 10:15 left in the half. In the run, junior
guard Justin Goree poured in 7 points coming off the bench.
Both teams would trade baskets over the final
ten minutes before Poole's jumper at the buzzer would give CSUDH a
one-point lead at the break.
In the second half the Toros were up by five
points, 49-44, before CSUS went on a 6-2 run to trim the deficit
to 49-48 with 14:10 left on a steal and layup by Davenport. But
Cal State Dominguez Hills would take control from there going on a
18-9 run over the next nine minutes taking a 10-point lead, 67-57,
with 5:13 remaining in the game.
The Toros would build the lead to as many as 21
points down the stretch while going on for the 82-63 win.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-15, 11-11 CCAA)
was led by senior center Kevin Blunt's 22 points while Poole
poured in 21 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Four CSUDH seniors played in their final game
of their collegiate career this evening. Other than Blunt, senior
Vincent Warsaw, Ernie Burries and Mario Perez closed out their
playing careers on a positive note savoring the victory over the
Warriors tonight.
Cal State Stanislaus (10-17, 7-15 CCAA) was led
by Davenport's 28 points while Brad Watkins chipped in with 14
points and pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds.
