CARSON, Calif.- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
women's basketball was coming off the biggest upset and win of its
season last night as they posted a 67-61 win over national
powerhouse CS Bakersfield. Obviously, the momentum carried over in
tonight's game as the Toros bid their 2001-02 season farewell, and
four seniors waved their collegiate careers goodbye with a
convincing 67-58 win over CS Stanislaus.
This was CSUDH's game from the beginning. They
took the quick lead off a basket by junior center Kendra Tease,
who made the following foul shot. The Warriors would tie it up off
a three-pointer by Ruby Webb. That was the only tie of the entire
game as the Toros would continue their scoring drive following
that mark.
CSUDH could not be stopped from the floor in
the first 20, connecting on 14 of 27 shots (52%). CSUDH built
their greatest lead of 15 with no time remaining when senior
Fercia Rambacal nailed a three pointer to put the Toros on top
36-21 as the teams took to the locker rooms. Tracee Lewis led all
players with nine points in the first 20, including one from long
range.
The Toros fire continued in the second half.
Lewis, making her final appearance as a Toro, was leading the
charge with 11 points, six of those coming from the charity
stripe. In fact, Lewis was a perfect 8 of 8 on the night from the
line. Senior Bryanna Norton was strong for the Toros on defense
tonight, forcing a Warrior turnover before fouling out.
CSUDH followed Norton's lead on defense, not
allowing a CSUS basket from 12:24 till 9:23 remaining. The Toros
would lead by as many as 21 in the second half.
Senior Christina Tucker also came alive in the
second 20, scoring three points and bringing down six boards. She
finished the night with seven points and a game-high ten rebounds.
With the seconds of her collegiate career
clicking down, Rambacal, pacing the clock, drove the baseline and
made the layup plus one for the Toros final score of the night and
an 67-58 final.
CSUDH had one of its best shooting nights
connecting on 42% of their shots, compared to the CSUS 30%.
The Toros closed out the 2001-02 season at 8-18
overall and 6-16 in the CCAA. |
