TUCSON, Ariz.-- The Arizona baseball team
matched its longest winning streak of the season with a 13-4 win
over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Frank Sancet Field Sunday
afternoon. The Wildcats swept the two-game series with the Toros
for their sixth consecutive victory and improved their record to
17-4 for the season. The Toros drop to 9-9-1 with loss.
Freshman Jeff Van Houten drove in five of
Arizona's 13 runs in the game and scored twice as well in a
3-for-5 day at the plate. He cleared the bases in the third inning
with a two-out, three-RBI triple, drove in one with a single in
the fifth and scored another on a ground out in the eighth.
Senior Chris Cunningham blasted his fourth home
run of the season in the bottom of the first, a three-run shot to
center, helping Arizona leap out to a 4-0 advantage early.
Arizona starter Joe Little (4-1) picked up his
team-high-tying fourth victory of the season on the mound. The
southpaw worked six innings in which he struck out six and walked
only one. Marc Kaiser worked the seventh and eighth before giving
way to Tony Sulser in the ninth.
CSUDH's Edgar Esqueda was the lone Toro to pair
hits on the afternoon, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs. DH starter
Don Bracken (1-2) picked up the loss, surrendering nine runs in
just 2.2 innings.
The Wildcats will return to the road next
weekend with a trip to Long Beach State to take on the 49ers in a
three game series in Southern California. Friday's game is set for
a 7 p.m. Tucson time first pitch.
