CARSON, Calif.- For the second consecutive
year, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) has
recognized Cal State Dominguez Hills for its outreach and
community service programs during the 2001-02 academic year. The
NCAS is an organization whose goal is to use the power of
education and the appeal of sport to positively influence the
community.
This year, Cal State Dominguez Hills was
actively involved in the surrounding communities. The school has
hosted the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) for the last two
summers. NYSP is a summer sports camp designed for under-
privileged and inner-city children. The goal of the camp is to
promote active and healthy lifestyles among the youth of the
community through sports and recreation.
Cal State Dominguez Hills Athletics Director
Ron Prettyman is very proud of the honor bestowed on his
department.
"This award signifies the
dedication of the CSUDH student athletes, coaches andstaff to not
only the campus but the local community as well. This is a
integral part of the education process as we prepare our student
athletes to become productive citizens."
In addition to NYSP, the Cal State Dominguez
Hills athletic teams offer on a regular basis free camps and
clinics to area youths. Through these camps, the athletes were
able to develop relationships with the children of the surrounding
communities, bringing the positive influences of sports into their
environments. The student-athletes were also active in the
classrooms through mentoring, teaching and readingprograms in
various local schools.
