THIS WEEK IN TOROS CROSS COUNTRY
Sept. 7 UC Irvine Invitational Central Park/Huntington Beach, CA
HEAD COACH WARREN EDMONSON: Coach
Edmonson begins his first season as head coach of the Cal State
Dominguez Hills cross country program after serving as the top
assistant last season. Edmonson, who also heads the Track and
Field program at CSUDH, comes to the Carson campus with a wealth
of collegiate and international track and field experience. An
Oakland native, Edmonson was a standout at UCLA, where he excelled
at the 100 meter race, capturing the Pac 8 Championship and the
NCAA Championship in that event. This year, Edmonson was inducted
into the UCLA Hall of Fame for his successes on the track during
his three seasons as a Bruin. After his collegiate career,
Edmonson brought his talents to the indoor world circuit. In 1973,
Edmonson set the world record in the 100 meters, followed by
co-holding the world record in the 70 meters in 1974.
SENIORITIS: Lack of experience should
not be a problem for the CSUDH cross country squad this season, as
the Toros roster features seven seniors out of 11 athletes. Aracne
Hernandez, who has been with the Toros since her freshman campaign
in 1999, will lead the squad this season. The remaining four
players do not lack in the experience department either, coming
into the 2002 season as juniors.
TOROS OPEN SEASON AT IRVINE: CSUDH will
kick off their 2002 cross country season at the UC Irvine
Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine. The 5,000 meter race will begin
at 9:00 a.m. at Central Park in Huntington Beach. In the same meet
last season, the Toros finished in 12th place with a total team
score of 346 points. CSUDH was one of the top Division II squads
to finish the meet.
