Juventino Morfin tallies equalizer in 80th minute to help Toros avoid upset
September 4, 2002

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.- For the first 80 minutes of the match today against Seattle University, Cal State Dominguez Hills did not look like the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. There were flashes of brilliance but nothing consistent of a program that has been the best in the country for the past two years. However, sophomore forward Juventino Morfin (Lincoln HS) saved the day by knocking in a ball in the 80th minute of play for the equalizer to help the Toros avoid its first home loss since the 2000 season today at Toro Field.

Both teams battled back and forth for much of the first half. CSUDH senior forward Scott White (Sonora HS) missed an opportunity to put the Toros on top when his shot from close range in the 39th minute of play hit the upper cross bar. Seattle responded with a goal at 42:58 after a flurry of shots in front of the Cal State Dominguez Hills goal.

After four consecutive shots inside the box, which included two highlight saves by CSUDH goalie Javier Barragan (LB Jordan HS) and two clearances at the mouth of the goal by the Toros defense, Seattle's Bobby McAlister collected a rebound and curled his shot to the upper far post for a 1-0 lead.

After halftime is when the Tale of Two Team's began with Cal State Dominguez Hills coming out of the intermission on fire outshooting the Redhawks 11-4. With several opportunities wasted and time clicking away, sophomore defender Jeff Kunze (Edison HS) sent a ball into the box from the right flank which found the head of Juventino Morfin. The 6-3 forward sent his shot to the near post just past SU keeper Brandon Sewell for the game-tying goal.

Both defenses would play even the rest of the way through regulation and two overtime periods for the non-conference draw. In the game, CSUDH (2-0-1) outshot Seattle 27-19. Toros goalie Javier Barragan had 11 saves in the game while Redhawk keeper Brandon Sewell registered seven stops in the net.

CSUDH is back in action on Monday, September 9 when they host Vanguard University beginning at 2 PM.
