September 9, 2002

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.- Cal State Dominguez Hills received two second half goals from Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) to lead the No. 3 ranked Toros to a 3-0 non-conference victory over Vanguard University today at Toro Field.

It looked like CSUDH (3-0-1) was going to cruise early as junior forward Eduardo Serrano knocked in his fourth goal of the year just one minute into the contest. Serrano took a pass from midfielder Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (N. Torrance HS) then hit his shot to the upper far post just over the hands of Lions keeper Christopher Swift making it 1-0. But Vanguard (0-4-0) played the Toros even the rest of the half going into the break 1-0.

Valencia gave CSUDH a 2-0 lead when he scored a great unassisted goal at 50:47. Valencia intercepted a ball at midfield and ran past two defenders through the middle of the field then beat the goalie one-on-one, slipping his shot to the far post. Then nearly 20 minutes later at 69:38, Valencia scored his second goal on a cross from the left flank from midfielder Victor Guerrero (Century HS). Valencia took the ball and blasted it to the far post to complete the scoring on the day.

Cal State Dominguez Hills outshot Vanguard 23-10. Toros starting goalie Javier Barragan (LB Jordan HS) earned the win making only one save in the first half. Freshman goalie Scott Wilson (S. Torrance HS) came off the bench in the second half and also recorded a save. Swift suffered the loss for the Lions while making seven saves in the game.

CSUDH will open up CCAA play this Thursday, September 12 hosting Cal State Stanislaus. Kick-off is scheduled for a 4 PM start.
