Two Late Goals Lead Toros Men Past Bakersfield

Bakersfield, Calif. — The Cal State Bakersfield men’s soccer team couldn’t pull off the upset two years in a row as Cal State Dominguez Hills scored twice late to take a 2­0 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory on the CSUB Main Soccer Field Saturday night.

The win gives CSDH (5­0­1, 2­0 CCAA) the ealy advantage in the CCAA central division race. CSUB (3­2, 1­1) falls three points off the pace.

The Toros set the tempo for much of Saturday’s match, forcing action the Bakersfield end between frequent CSUB counters. Both teams hit the cross bar in the first half, but neither seriously threatened otherwise through 45 minutes.

The second half saw the ’Runner defense lose just enough composure to make the Toros a level more dangerous. Although the ’Runners continued to counter, Dominguez Hills effectively parried each attack until it finally got the goal it needed with under 16 minutes to play.

The match­winner was well deserved. Eddie Gonzles­Pinto found Juventino Morfin in a crowded CSUB box. Morfin’s shot gave ’Runner goalkeeper Josh Wicks (San Bernardino, Calif.) little chance, but Wicks managed a valiant lunge to get a hand on the ball and deflect it off the near post where it took a Toro bounce and crawled over the line for the 1­0 lead.

The ’Runners pushed forward for the equalizer, but the result was a scattered defense effort which Dominguez Hills exploited for an insurance goal in the 86th minute. Gabriel Valencia did the honors, running unmarked in the box to head home a Victor Guerrero free kick.

The Toros return to action Wednesday afternoon when they host Cal State L.A. Start time is 1:30 p.m.
