CARSON, Calif.- The real Cal State Dominguez
Hills stood up in the second half after just going through the
motions for the first 45 minutes of play. A team that couldn't
connect a pass to save their life in the first half, came out on
fire in the second half as James Leary (Bishop Montgomery HS)
registered the game-winning goal to lift the Toros to a 2-0
California Collegiate Athletic Association victory today over Cal
State LA.
CSUDH (6-0-1, 3-0-0 CCAA), ranked No. 3 in the
latest NSCAA poll, came out flat in the first half. But coach Joe
Flanagan's pep talk at the break seemed to spark the squad scoring
two goals within a minute to take control. Leary got the Toros on
the board at 61:56 when he took a pass from Jaret Minami (W.
Torrance HS) and lofted his shot over the head of CSULA 6'7"
goalie Ray Wilhelm.
Less than a minute later, junior forward
Eduardo Serrano knocked in a rebound off a Minami blast from 18
yards out to give Cal State Dominguez Hills the 2-0 advantage. For
the rest of the half, CSUDH would control the tempo but would be
unable to find the back of the net again the rest of the way.
The Toros were outshot 5-2 in the first half
but then outshot Cal State LA (3-4-0, 1-2-0 CCAA) 16-6 in the
second period. CSUDH goalie Javier Barragan (LB Jordan HS) earned
his fourth consecutive shutout with five saves in the game. Golden
Eagle goalie Ray Wilhelm took the loss while making five saves.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in action
this Friday, September 20 when they travel to Cal State San
Bernardino. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 PM.
