LOOKING AHEAD:
The Toros will take a breather from the grueling CCAA schedule and travel to the Great Northwest to take on regional foes Seattle Pacific and Western Washington. CSUDH will return for their Homecoming game on Oct. 11 hosting Sonoma State.

A QUICK LOOK BACK:
CSUDH rebounded from their worst loss in nearly 10 years with a resounding 4-0 win over Grand Canyon. Then the Toros took an early 1-0 lead over No. 2 UC San Diego only to lose 2-1 in overtime.

TOROS SUCCUMB IN OVERTIME TO NO. 2 TRITONS 2-1:
The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team matched every play of the nationally-ranked UC San Diego Tritons in the CCAA matchup on Sunday at Toro Field, but a well-placed shot to beat the keeper ended the match in the third minute of overtime giving the Tritons the 2-1 win. CSUDH was the first squad to strike, when in the 25th minute of action Toro Norma Gutierrez took control of a loose ball and placed it by the far post for the 1-0 lead. The Toro defense would stay strong as CSUDH preserved that lead into the half. But the Tritons, the 2-time defending national champion and ranked second in the nation, would not go down quietly as they scored in the 55th minute. Triton Kristen Conahan placed a header in the back of the net for the 1-1 tie. The end of 90 saw a 1-1 tie with the teams ready to go into sudden victory OT. In the third minute of overtime play, UCSD's Amy Goker, off an assist from Lindsay Treankler, drew CSUDH's keeper Alba Garcia out of the box and popped a shot over her head to close out the game with the Tritons 2-1 win.

TOROS SHUTOUT CANYON 4-0:
The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team put together a solid all-around performance scoring twice in each half to go on for a 4-0 victory over Grand Canyon in California Collegiate Athletic Association action last Friday at Toro Field. CSUDH got what turned out to be the game-winner early from Sheila Cook in the 7th minute. After a mad scramble in front of the Canyon goal off a corner kick, Cook collected a rebound and hit her shot to the near post for a 1-0 lead. Erin Fieger made it 2-0 before intermission with her first goal of the season. At 41:14, Fieger headed in a beautiful corner kick from Norma Gutierrez past the diving Grand Canyon goalie Jolene Gagnon. In the second half, Kim Acino made it 3-0 at 52:49 when she took a cross from Giermaine Phillippe and headed her shot to the far post just past the outstretched hands of Gagnon. Lecia Davis then closed out the scoring at 78:01 on a breakaway. Davis accepted a pass from Dianne Garza and beat the keeper one-on-one, knocking her shot to the back of the net for the 4-0 final. CSUDH's defense and goalie Alba Garcia would notch their seventh shutout of the season. Garcia earned the win with two saves in goal. Gagnon suffered the loss while making eight saves in the match. In the game, CSUDH outshot Grand Canyon 19-2.

TORO TRAILS:
CSUDH has outscored the opposition 70-29 including a 23-10 edge in goals scored. The Toros also have a 24-9 advantage in assists while outshooting opponents 177-138. The Toros have outscored the opposition 10-4 in the first half and 13-5 in the late period. CSUDH is averaging 16.1 shots per game while holding opponents to 12.5 shots per game.

MOVIN' ON UP:
Senior forward Dianne Garza and junior goalkeeper Alba Garcia continue their climb up the all-time charts in several categories. Garza's 96 career points rank her fourth, just one point shy of the third place spot held by Kristi White (1986-89). Her 38 career goals rank her 3rd all-time while her 20 career assists put her tied for 8th. With seven shutouts this year, Garcia's 12 career shutouts rank her sixth all-time. Her 15 career wins now place her in sixth place just two behind Chris Pezzulo (1989-90).

THE COACH:
Toro fans will notice a change on the sidelines this year. Former head coach Karen Hanks, who guided the program for the past seven years, recently left to become the head coach at NCAA I Sacramento State. Men's coach Joe Flanagan will assume dual duties this year only. A nationwide search for a replacement is expected later this year. Flanagan has coached the men's program for the past eight seasons. Last year he led the Toros to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA II title game. In 2000, he guided the squad to their first-ever national championship while being named the 2000 NCAA II National Coach of the Year. His career record stands at 113-51-9 (.679) and is the 15th winningest active coach at the NCAA II level. Flanagan has led the men's program to the last three California Collegiate Athletic Association crown's.
