BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Ian Weinberg scored
with 20 minutes remaining, giving Western Washington University a
2-1 victory over nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in a
non-conference men's soccer game Monday afternoon at Civic
Stadium. The triumph extended Western's unbeaten streak to seven
games, the longest since 1990, as the Vikings improved to 8-3-1.
CSUDH, ranked No.5 in the NSCAA/NCAA Division
II National Poll released today, fell to 10-2-1, suffering a
second straight loss for the first time since 1999. The Toros
placed second at the NCAA II National Championship last year after
winning the national title in 2000.
After a scoreless first half, the two teams
combined for three goals in a 10-minute span of the second half.
Western opened the scoring in the 61st minute,
as midfielder Ian McLeod dribbled down the right side and fed
forward David Hileman, who found the net from 12 yards out for his
second goal of the year.
CSUDH tied the game a little less than five
minutes later, as forward Eduardo Serrano scored his 10th goal of
the season, beating two Western defenders to a pass from Juventino
Morfin and scoring from 15 yards. But the Vikings got the
game-winner barely four minutes after that, as Weinberg stole a
ball just outside the top of the penalty area then hit a low shot
into the right corner of the net from 16 yards for his fourth goal
of the year.
The Toros return home on Friday to host Sonoma
State University in a crucial conference matchup. The men's team
kicks off at 3 p.m.
