THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Oct. 18 #7 CSUDH @ Chico State University Soccer Stadium, 7:30 PM
Oct. 20 #7 CSUDH @ UC Davis Aggie Field, 3:00 PM
| THE SCOUTING REPORT |
| SCOUTING UC DAVIS: UC Davis is in
second place in the CCAA North Division standings with a 9-4-1
overall record and a 5-4-0 mark in league play. The Aggies play
well at home with a 5-2-1 home field advantage. Davis is coming
off a 2-1 loss against Cal Poly Pomona. CSUDH holds a 6-2-0 edge
in the all-time series. The Toros last faced UCD in the CCAA
Championship game on 11/4/01 and won 1-0 behind Joe Cartlidge's
game-winning shot. Leading Davis this year is forward Ryan Shaw
with 21 points (9g, 3a). No other player is in double figures
offensively. In goal, Nic Platter has registered 4 shutouts and
a 0.99 GAA. |
| ABOUT CHICO STATE: Chico State
enters the week with a 4-9-0 overall record and are third in the
CCAA North with a 4-5-0 mark. The Wildcats are even at home with
a 3-3 record but have had difficulty on the road posting only
one win in seven roadtrip's. CSUC is on a 2-game skid losing
both games last weekend against Cal Poly Pomona (1-2) and CS San
Bernardino (1-3). Leading the Wildcats with 21 points (7g, 7a)
is Chris Woldolowski. In the net, Dustin Eastment has recorded a
2.39 GAA allowing 21 goals on the year. |
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Toros will head to NoCal this weekend to take on Chico State
and UC Davis on Friday and Sunday in crucial regional matchups.
The team will take on Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock on Saturday,
Oct. 26 before returning home for their final regular season home
game against Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
TOROS WIN SHOWDOWN OVER SONOMA 2-0:
Cal State Dominguez Hills came out on top in a battle of the top
two teams in the NCAA II Far West Region as the Toros defeated
Sonoma State 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association
action Friday at Toro Field. CSUDH rebounded nicely after coming
back home from a horrid two-game road trip last week in the
Northwest which saw the Toros lose two consecutive games for the
first time in nearly three years. Despite the tough trip, Cal
State Dominguez Hills came into the week as the No. 1-ranked team
in the region. Sonoma entered the week as the No. 2 squad and
would have solidified their shot at postseason play with a
victory. After a very physical scoreless first half, Cal State
Dominguez Hills got the game-winner at 48:20 when forward Eduardo
Serrano scored his 10th goal of the season. On a free kick, Eddie
Gonzales-Pinto (N. Torrance HS) tapped the ball to Serrano who
wrapped his shot around the Sonoma wall to the far post from 20
yards out. Forward Scott White (Sonora HS) made it 2-0 when he
accepted the ball from Rick Cobb (Warren HS) at the 40-yard line,
beat two defenders then SSU goalie Matt Bernard to the near post
for his 5th goal of the year. Sonoma State almost cut the lead in
half in the 63rd minute, but Tony Bussard's shot from the left
side of the box hit the near post and ricocheted out where it was
cleared. The Seawolves out-shot CSUDH 15-8 in the game, including
a 11-4 advantage in the second half, but the Toros defensive line
came up big blocking several Sonoma shots at the top of the box.
Toros goalie Javier Barragan (LB Jordan HS) earns his seventh
shutout of the season with five saves between the bars.
CSUDH DEFENSE STIFLES GATORS, TOROS WIN
1-0:
Juventino Morfin's (Lincoln HS) goal late in the first half was
all the Toros defense would need as Cal State Dominguez Hills
defeated San Francisco State 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic
Association action Sunday at Toro Field. It was a defensive battle
the entire first half with both teams combining for only five
shots. However, the Toros offense broke through with just seconds
to go in the first period when Morfin headed home a shot at 44:35
for his sixth goal of the season. The score was set up when
Eduardo Serrano crossed the ball to the far post from the right
flank off a free kick. CSUDH's Rick Cobb saved the ball from going
out of the end line and flicked his pass to the head of Morfin who
knocked it past San Francisco goalie Russell Miller for the 1-0
lead. Both teams would come out more offensive-minded in the
second half combining for 20 shots, with CSUDH having a 13-7
advantage, but neither offense would put up a tally in the final
45 minutes of play. Toros goalie Javier Barragan registered two
saves for his eighth shutout of the year. That mark now places him
second all-time for shutouts in a season. He is four shy of
breaking the all-time mark (12) set by Luis Morales in 2001.
REEVES JUST SUPER, SELECTED BRINE CCAA
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Toros defender Nathan Reeves (Lakewood HS) has been named the
Brine California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer
Player of the Week for the week of October 7-13. Reeves, a
sophomore from Lakewood, was a defensive slalwart whose intensity
helped the 7th-ranked Toros rebound from an upset loss at Western
Washington and defeat CCAA rivals Sonoma State and San Francisco
State last week. Following the 2-1 loss at WWU, CSUDH shut out
Sonoma, ranked 2nd in the Far West Region at the time. Reeves had
numerous steals and slide tackles, and had a tremendous
man-marking game in leading the Toros to the 2-0 win. He won every
50/50 ball that came his way. He then led the back line defense
that stymied a physical San Francisco State team, 1-0, again with
a solid defensive performance. Reeves won all 50/50 balls his way
despite facing larger opposing players. The victories preserved
the Toros top ranking in the Far West Region.
BARRAGAN JUST GETTIN' BETTER:
Former Long Beach Jordan HS standout Javier Barragan continues to
shine in his first year in a CSUDH uniform. Barragan, a 6-1
goalie, has already registered 8 shutouts in 14 games which ranks
him second all-time in the Toros record books for shutouts in a
season. He has only allowed 8 goals all year giving him a 0.61
goals against average which currently places him second in the
all-time lists, just two-tenths behind all-time leader Garrett
Estrin (0.59). Barragan's 11 wins this year also put him in a
6th-place tie for wins in a season. He only needs two more wins to
move in 2nd.
WHO SAID BIGGER IS BETTER:
The last two years the Toro faithful has been blessed to see some
great soccer, both on the offensive and defensive side. Coming
into the 2002 season, one of the concerns was replacing the size
of all-america 6-1 defender Joe Cartlidge and all-region 5-10
defender Nathan Ballard. But the concerns have been alleviated.
The CSUDH defense is on pace to break the all-time record for
fewest goals allowed (19) set way back in 1986. The 2002 defensive
unit, which averages 5-8 in height, has allowed only 9 goals all
year for an opponent 0.6 goals per game average. For what the back
line lacks in height, they more than make up with talent and
tenacity.
TWO SHY, SHY:
Midfielder Victor Guerrero is just two assists shy of tying the
all-time mark for career assists. He currently has 26 career
assists and is nearing the mark of 28 held by former Toros great
Sean Lockhart (2000-01). His 10 assists place him in a tie for
fourth all-time in season assists. He is on pace to break the mark
of 15 set by Lockhart in 2000.
MASTER OF THEIR DOMAIN:
Cal State Dominguez Hills kept its No. 1 Far West Region ranking
this week despite a tough upset loss at Western Washington last
Monday, 2-1. The Toros took care of business this past weekend
with an important 2-0 victory over then No. 2 region ranked Sonoma
and a 1-0 win over unranked San Francisco St. CSUDH now begins an
important 3-game trek to NoCal schools Chico State, UC Davis and
CS Stanislaus before returning home on Oct. 30 for a showdown
against the No. 2 team in the region Cal State Bakersfield. The
Toros are in an envious position of not needing any help from
other schools in order to earn one of the top two spots in the Far
West and advance to the NCAA playoffs. The squad is in total
control of its destiny and will determine their own fate by taking
care of business on the field. Here is the entire list of the Far
West Region rankings as of Oct. 14: 1. CSUDH, 2. CS Bakersfield,
3. Sonoma St., 4. UC Davis, 5. Seattle Univ., 6. UC San Diego, 7.
Seattle Pacific, 8. Western Washington, 9. Cal Poly Pomona.
THE COACH:
Head coach Joe Flanagan is in his ninth season at the helm of the
Toros program. Last year Flanagan led CSUDH to its second
consecutive appearance in the NCAA II National Championship game
only to succumb to University of Tampa 2-1 in the final minutes of
the game. Flanagan, the 2001 NCAA II Far West Region Coach of the
Year, became the Toros all-time winningest coach last year and now
is 113-51-9 (.679). CSUDH has now won the past three CCAA titles
and is the two-time defending Far West Regional champ.
MORE FLANAGAN:
Heading into this season, Flanagan in the 15th winningest active
coach at the NCAA Division II level with a 113-51-9 record. The
only coach on the West Coast that ranks higher than Flanagan is
legendary Seattle Pacific mentor Cliff McCrath who leads all
active coaches at any level with 535 wins.
