Toros Men Upset 2-0 by Aggies in CCAA Soccer
October 20, 2002

Complete Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis scored two early goals then relied on its defense and goalkeeper Nic Platter as the Aggies upset No.7 Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game on "Break the Record Day" at Aggie Field Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Aggies improve to 11-4-1 overall, 7-4 in conference action while Dominguez Hills suffers its first CCAA loss and falls to 13-3-1 overall, 10-1 in CCAA action.

On a day in which UC Davis broke the men's soccer all-time attendance record with 903 fans, the Aggies held the Toros scoreless for the first time in their last 24 games, dating back to a 1-0 defeat against Cal State Bakersfield on October 24, 2001.

UC Davis wasted little time in getting on the board as they pressed from the opening whistle. With just over two minutes gone by, Yuta Tanaka possessed the ball on the right side of the Toro box. He sent a pass across the goal to Jeremy Warner, who redirected the ball back into the box where senior Tyler Nelson slammed it in from close range. It marked Nelson's first goal of the season and gave the Aggies the early, 1-0 lead.

UC Davis would score its second goal of the game a little over 15 minutes later when forward Ryan Shaw sent a long pass up the left side to Tanaka. Tanaka took two touches before giving it back to Shaw as he cut towards the goal. Shaw's first shot was saved by Toro goalkeeper Javier Barragan, but Barragan could not control the ball and Shaw put back the rebound for the 2-0 lead at the 17:49 mark.

The second half saw both teams going at each other, each attacking when possible. UC Davis seemed to have the better chances in the second period as Shaw's one-on-one breakaway was foiled by Barragan while defender Connor Voss has his header blocked by a Toro defender on the goal line after pushing the ball past Barragan.

In the end, the Aggies recorded their sixth shutout of the season as Platter recorded five saves on the afternoon while Barragan made four.

The Toros next face the Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Oct. 26.
