DAVIS, Calif. -- Seniors Cynthia Rail, Meghan
Phillips and Melissa Reid all had goals while Christine Ogden and
Krystyn Lizak combined for the Aggies' sixth shutout of the season
as UC Davis defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-0, in a
California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game on
"Break the Record Day" at Aggie Field Sunday afternoon.
With the win, UC Davis improves to 9-3-2 on the
season, 7-2-2 in CCAA play while Dominguez Hills falls to 8-6-3
overall, 5-5-1 in conference play.
On a day in which UC Davis broke the women's
soccer all-time attendance record with 652 fans, Rail wasted
little time getting the crowd involved as she put the Aggies ahead
in the 17th minute.
Defender Katie Shesgreen controlled the ball
along the left side then sent a pass that split the defense to a
wide-open Rail, who only had Toro keeper Leslie Taylor to beat.
The senior took one touch then sent the ball to the left corner of
the goal for the 1-0 lead.
With time running out in the first half, the
Aggies sent a long ball into the goal box. It found the head of
freshman Lindsey Raymond who flicked it behind her to Phillips.
Phillips then jammed it past Taylor in the 45th minute, giving UC
Davis the 2-0 halftime lead.
The Toros had their best chance of the game
early on when Dianne Garza had a breakaway with only Ogden to
beat. Just inside the box, she sent a low shot across the goal
that went wide left in the fifth minute.
In the second half the two teams went
back-and-forth controlling play. Each squad took five shots in the
period and the scoring came to a close in the 67th minute on
Reid's first goal of the season. Freshman Kristin Aja gathered the
ball near midfield then split the Toro defense off the dribble to
the left side of the box.
Her cross found the foot of Reid in front of
the Toro goal who flicked it over Taylor for the 3-0 final margin.
The Toros next face the Warriors of Cal State
Stanislaus on Saturday, Oct. 26.
