Oct. 26 #12 CSUDH @ Cal State Stanislaus Warrior Soccer Field,
12:30 PM
| THE SCOUTING REPORT |
| SCOUTING THE WARRIORS: Cal State
Stanislaus enters the week with a 5-11-0 overall record and a
3-8-0 mark in league play putting them in 3rd place in the CCAA
Central Division. The Warriors are on a 2-game losing skid after
dropping decisions at San Francisco State (0-1) and Sonoma State
(2-3) last weekend. CSUS has lost five of its past six matches
after winning two in a row midway through the season. Leading
the squad is Tim Parola with 10 points on 5 goals. Hugo Brambila
follows with 9 points on 3 goals and 3 assists. In goal, Matthew
Buckman has compiled a 1.91 goals against average allowing 21
goals in 12 games. As a team, Stanislaus has been outscored
99-52 including a 35-18 margin in goals scored. |
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Toros will head back up to NoCal with a game on Saturday
against Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. Kick-off is set for 12:30
PM at Warrior Field. The team will then return home for a showdown
against Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 30 in a battle of the top
two teams in the Far West region.
TOROS UPSET BY UC DAVIS, 2-0:
UC Davis scored two early goals then relied on its defense as the
Aggies upset the No. 7 Toros 2-0 in CCAA action on Sunday. The
loss was the first league loss for CSUDH this year and only the
second in the last three seasons. It was also the first time the
Toros were held scoreless since 10/24/01 against CS Bakersfield
(0-1). The Aggies struck early taking a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute
of play. 15 minutes later, Davis tallied the final goal of the
game off a rebound from Toros goalie Javier Barragan (LB Jordan
HS) at 17:49. After that, the Aggie defense packed it in and was
able to hold the Toros off the rest of the way to go on for the
conference win. In the game, CSUDH and UCD each got off 15 shots
while Barragan made 4 saves in the losing effort.
TOROS SCORE SIX TIMES IN SHUTOUT OVER
CHICO:
A second half scoring barrage led the Toros to a 6-0 shutout win
over host Chico State last Friday. CSUDH took a 1-0 halftime lead,
on what proved to be the game-winner, in the 26th minute. Eddie
Gonzales-Pinto (N. Torrance HS) collected a loose ball in front of
the goal and banged it home for the lead. In the second half, the
Toros scored three times over an 18 minute span to take a
commanding 4-0 lead. Forward Scott White (Sonora HS) made it 2-0
at 61:02 on a breakaway, beating the goalie one-on-one to the
right post. White then assisted on the next goal when on another
breakaway, he fed a short pass to fellow forward Eduardo Serrano
who then put the ball in the back of the net for his 11th goal of
the year and a 3-0 lead at 66:30. Sophomore forward Michael
Jimenez (Bishop Montgomery HS) then knocked in his first goal of
the season at 79:05 off a double assist from Ryan Taylor (Ayala
HS) and Juventino Morfin (Lincoln HS) for a 4-0 lead. Senior
all-america forward Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) got into the
act with his fifth goal of the year at 87:15 on another breakaway
before reserve Steve Camp (Del Oro HS) closed out the barrage with
his first goal of the year at 89:27. The shutout was the 10th of
the season for the Toros defense as Barragan made 2 saves in
between the pipes. Backup goalie Scott Wilson (S. Torrance HS)
played the final 19 minutes of the match and recorded a save.
TOROS BOOTED FROM TOP SPOT IN REGION:
For the first time in over two years, the Toros find themselves in
unfamiliar territory in the latest regional rankings. After a
28-week run as the top team in the Far West regional polls, Cal
State Dominguez Hills has fallen to No. 2 after its upset loss to
UC Davis over the weekend. CSUDH took over the No. 1 spot in the
far west region on September 25, 2000 and have been there ever
since. That is until this week when the latest National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings came out. Cal
State Bakersfield is now ranked No. 1 after puting together a
12-game unbeaten streak dating back to 9/14/02. On that night, the
Toros defeated the Roadrunners 2-0 outshooting the home team 18-8.
DOWN BUT CERTAINLY NOT OUT:
Despite finding themselves out of the top spot in the NCAA II Far
West Region for the first time in over two years, the team is
still firmly entrenched as the No. 2 team in the region. The Toros
just defeated No. 3 ranked Sonoma State on Oct. 11. After its game
against Cal State Stanislaus this Saturday, the Toros will come
home for a showdown against Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 30. No
doubt the 'Runners will have a "Bull's-eye" on their
backs when they visit Toro Field.
WALKING WOUNDED:
The Toros squad against UC Davis last Sunday looked like a
M.A.S.H. Unit. One of the leaders of the defensive unit, Nathan
Reeves (Lakewood HS), did not play due to a groin injury. He is
probable for Saturday's matchup against the Warriors. Key reserve
Michael Jimenez came off the field with a knee injury. He is
questionable for this weekend's game. Playmaker Victor Guerrero
(Century HS) and starting midfielder Eddie Gonzales-Pinto both
came out of the game with knee injuries in the first half and did
not return. Both are listed as day-to-day. Leading scorer Eduardo
Serrano was also bit by the injury bug, however he returned later
in the second half. Defender Brian Suarez (Mary Star of the Sea
HS), who suffered a severe ankle sprain against Grand Canyon on
Sept. 27, did not play and is probable for Saturday's game.
RARE GOOSE-EGG LAID BY TOROS:
On Sunday the Toros offense was shutout for the first time in 2002
and only the third time in the last 74 games dating back to the
1999 season. Last year the Toros dropped 1-0 decisions at the feet
of Alliant University and Cal State Bakersfield. Prior to last
year, CSUDH had not been shutout since just past midway of the '99
campaign.
