CARSON, Calif.- Cal State Dominguez Hills said
goodbye today to one of the biggest home field advantages in NCAA
history with a 2-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield. Today's
game marked the final home game for CSUDH during the current
campaign.
Lecia Davis (N. Torrance HS) scored the
game-winner with just under two minutes to play in regulation to
give the Toros the California Collegiate Athletic Association win
at Toro Field.
Senior forward Dianne Garza (Temple City HS)
shined during Senior Day by giving the Toros a 1-0 advantage
early. Garza accepted a cross from Davis just 1:15 into the match
and placed her shot to the far post, past Bakersfield goalie
Stephanie Hall.
The score remained there until the 70th minute
when forward Rebekah Rogers (Cypress HS) equalized for the
Roadrunners. Monica Almarez sent a pass just outside the center
circle to Rogers streaking down the left wing. Rogers dribbled
past two defenders inside the box and CSUDH goalie Leslie Taylor
(Ayala HS) stayed on her line and was beat to the near post.
It looked as if the game was going into
overtime, but Davis came up with the game-winner with just 1:41
left in regulation. From the right flank, Davis served a pass into
the box and bounced over a drawn out Hall. The ball bounced twice
and into the far net for the game-winner, 2-1.
In four career starts in goal for CSUDH, Taylor
(Ayala HS) is now 3-1 with the win today while making three saves
in between the posts. Hall took the loss, allowing both goals
while making three saves.
The win closes out a memorable heritage that
began in 1984 for Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros won its
first-ever national title on this hallowed ground, with a 2-1 over
Sonoma State in 1991. CSUDH has played host to two NCAA II Soccer
Final Four Championships, several NCAA playoff games and one CCAA
Championship Tournament just to name a few events. Due to progress
and the Home Depot National Training Center, which is set to open
in June 2003, the Toros will move to a new 5,000 seat soccer
complex just south of Toro Field beginning next year.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-6-3, 7-5-1 CCAA)
will play its final regular season match at Cal State LA this
Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The CCAA Central Division champs will then
travel to NoCal for the CCAA Tournament to be held at Sonoma
State, Nov. 7-9. CSUB (5-12-2, 3-9-1 CCAA) close out the season
this Saturday at home versus Cal State Stanislaus.
