LOOKING AHEAD:
The Toros head to Rohnert Park, CA to participate in the 2002 CCAA Championship Tournament on the campus of Sonoma State. CSUDH enters the tourney as the No. 3 seed by virtue of winning the CCAA Central Division. The Toros will face No. 1 seed, and two-time defending NCAA champ, UC San Diego in the first semifinal. The other semifinal features No. 2 seed UC Davis & No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona.

A QUICK LOOK BACK:
The Toros won their final two regular season games against Cal State Bakersfield (2-1) and on the road at Cal State LA (2-0).

TOROS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH VICTORY:
The Toros closed out the 2002 regular season schedule last Saturday with a win over crosstown rival Cal State LA, 2-0. Junior midfielder Lindsay Dragich (San Pedro HS) scored her first goal of the yearjust two seconds before the intermission. Dragich took headed home the game-winner at 44:58. Laci Gruner (Mayfair HS) and Erin Fieger (Mira Costa HS) assisted on the goal. CSUDH's Kristen Walsh (Mayfair HS) tallied the final goal of the match at 53:03. Walsh took a Lecia Davis (N. Torrance HS) pass and one-timed her shot to the far post for her second goal of the year. The defense and goalie Leslie Taylor (Ayala HS) made it stand, holding on for the 2-0 victory. In five career starts in between the posts, Taylor is now 4-1 two shutouts. In the game, CSUDH outshot CSULA 18-13.

CSUDH DEFEATS BAKERSFIELD WITH LATE GOAL, 2-1:
Cal State Dominguez Hills said goodbye last Wednesday to one of the biggest home field advantages in NCAA history with a 2-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield. The game marked the final home game for CSUDH during the current campaign. Lecia Davis scored the game-winner with just under two minutes to play in regulation to give the Toros the California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Toro Field. Senior forward Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) shined during Senior Day by giving the Toros a 1-0 advantage early. Garza accepted a cross from Davis just 1:15 into the match and placed her shot to the far post, past Bakersfield goalie Stephanie Hall. The score remained there until the 70th minute when the Roadrunners equalized. It looked as if the game was going into overtime, but Davis came up with the game-winner with just 1:41 left in regulation. From the right flank, Davis served a pass into the box and bounced over a drawn out Hall. The ball bounced twice and into the far net for the game-winner, 2-1. Taylor earned the win making three saves in between the posts.

DAVIS NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Cal State Dominguez Hills midfielder Lecia Davis has been named the Brine California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of October 28 - November 3 it was announced by the league office this week. Davis, a senior from Torrance (N. Torrance HS), led the Toros to two wins to close out the regular season last week. She had an assist and scored the game-winning goal with under two minutes to play to give CSUDH a 2-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield. Davis tallied an assist in the Toros' 2-0 win at Cal State L.A. to finish the week with one goal and two assists. The weekly honor is the first for Davis since joining the program in 2001, and the second such honor for the Toros this year. Davis joins CSUDH goalie Alba Garcia who was selected for the week of Sept. 9-15.

GOODBYE TORO FIELD:
Last Wednesday's game closed out a memorable women's soccer heritage that began in 1984 for Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros won its first-ever NCAA national title on this hallowed ground, with a 2-1 over Sonoma State in 1991. CSUDH has played host to two NCAA II Soccer Final Four Championships, several NCAA playoff games and one CCAA Championship Tournament just to name a few events. Due to progress and the Home Depot National Training Center, which is set to open in June 2003, the Toros will move to a new 5,000 seat soccer complex just south of Toro Field beginning next year.

TOROS CCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY:
The Toros wrapped up its second consecutive CCAA Central Division title since the three division format was adopted in 2000. The win clinched a berth into the CCAA Championship Tournament for the second straight year. Since the inception of the league championship event five years ago in 1998, CSUDH has qualified four times and captured the inaugural event held in Bakersfield with a 1-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona. In 1999, CPP exacted a bit of revenge against the Toros with a 1-0 four-overtime win in the championship game at Sonoma during a torrential downpouring rain. In 2000, CSUDH missed the championship event, for the first and only time, after being eliminated with a 1-0 loss to Bakersfield in the final game of the season. Last year, CSUDH advanced to the tournament only to drop a 2-1 game in the semifinals to Cal Poly Pomona in La Jolla, CA.

TORO TIDBITS:
The squad is 11-6-3 overall and 8-5-1 in CCAA play. CSUDH moved up two spots to No. 6 in this week's NSCAA Far West Region coaches poll. Garza continues to lead the team with 21 points on 10 goals and an assist. Davis is now second in scoring with 13 points (4g, 5a). Junior midfielder Tanya Wilson (4g, 3a), senior midfielder Kim Acino (4g, 3a) and Gruner (4g, 3a) follow with 11 points each. Defender, turned backup goalie Leslie Taylor has compiled a 1.00 goals against average after being pushed into service when Alba Garcia suffered a season-ending leg injury three weeks ago.

CENTURY CLUB:
Forward Dianne Garza became only the third player in CSUDH women's soccer history to score 100 career points. Her goal against Bakersfield last week gave her 21 points on the year and now has an even 100 since joining the program in 1998. Garza joins Amy Rubin (140) and Heather Rolland (132) in the elite century club.

SENIOR DAY:
Six senior played in their final game at Toro Field last week. Dianne Garza, Yvette Gonzales, Lecia Davis, Norma Gutierrez, Kim Acino and Amy Wetherbee were all honored during pregame ceremonies. The Cal State Dominguez Hills Athletics Department would like to thank them all for their fine representation of the University on and off the field. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors!
