TOROS TAKE A BREAK FROM CONFERENCE PLAY
After two straight CCAA games, the Toros will have a break from
conference play as they face the GSAC opponent of Vanguard
University on Saturday, December 14 in their lone game of the
week. First tip is slated for 7 p.m. in the Torodome. The 2-1, 1-1
CCAA Toros split the Cal State LA series this past week, losing
the conference opener on Thursday. CSUDH came back to avenge that
loss on Saturday as they traveled to the Eagles Nest and posted
the win over the Golden Eagles.
HEAD COACH VAN GIRARD
Coach Girard enters his fifteenth season at the helm of the Toros
basketball program. In this time, Girard has posted a
185-191record. He has led CSUDH to two consecutive CCAA conference
titles (1994-96), and has been named CCAA Coach of the Year five
times, including three in a row (1993-1996). Girard has coached
one All-American, two All-West Region players, three CCAA MVP's
and 29 all-conference players. His first win at the collegiate
coaching level came on November 25, 1988, when he led CSUDH to a
82-68 victory against Incarante Word.
A LOOK AT THE 2002-03 TOROS ROSTER
CS Dominguez Hills returns eight players from last year's squad
that went 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the CCAA conference. There are
a total of six new recruits, including two top freshmen recruits.
This season's roster features three seniors, three juniors, three
sophomores and five freshmen. The Toros are also taller this
season, with eight players at six feet tall or over. The tallest
Toros are freshman Jessica Brown (Chino, CA) and senior Kendra
Tease (Carson, CA) who measure 6-2.
MENDEZ HAS CAREER NIGHT
Junior Adriana Mendez (Santa Ana, CA) had a career-night in the
Toros season-opening 74-64 win over Cal Baptist University. The
guard poured in a game-high and team-high 22 points.
TEAM OF THIEVES
The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team set a new
school record for steals in a game in the win over CBU. The Toros
recorded 25 steals on the night, breaking the old record of 24 set
twice in the 1983 and 1989 seasons. Freshman forward Zipporah
Chase (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore guard Octavia Askew (Orange
County, CA) led the charge with five take-aways apiece for CSUDH.
FAB FRESHMEN
A team could be considered lucky if they have one freshman star,
but the Toros might be twice as lucky if two freshmen follow the
trend that they have been setting so far this season. Tameka Blue
(Watson Villa, CA) and Teresa Cooper (Simi Valley, CA) both scored
in double figures in the opening game of collegiate basketball.
Blue, a guard, had 15 points including going 2 of 4 from beyond
the arc, while Cooper poured in 13, going 5 of 8 from the field.
The trend of the fabulous freshmen continued in the following two
games as they both put up double-figure performances in both
outings versus Cal State LA. Blue is averaging a team-leading 15.7
points per game, while Brown is second on the squad with 13.7 ppg.
PERKINS PICKS UP DOUBLE-DOUBLE
You knew that it would not take long for senior center Nakeisha
Perkins (Tarzana, CA) to pick up her first double-double of the
season. The center did so on Saturday night in the Toros 72-62
victory over Cal State LA. Perkins poured in 16 points, which is a
career-best, and pulled down 10 boards for CSUDH.
THREE POINT WATCH
The Toros have been impressive from three point range so far this
season. As a squad they are 16 of 36 (44%) from the beyond the
arc. They are led from deep by Blue, who is 8 of 16 (50%) from
three point land. The Toros are outshooting their opponents from
three point range, 16-34 (44%) to 10-33 (30%).
