CARSON, Calif.- The Cal State Dominguez Hills
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and CSUDH Athletics
played Santa Claus last Friday, December 6, by delivering holiday
gifts to the Children's Unit at nearby U.C.L.A. Harbor Medical
Center.
For the last three weeks, the SAAC and the
athletics department sponsored a toy drive in conjunction with
In-N-Out Burger. Any fan that brought an unopened gift to the
men's and women's basketball games on Nov. 22 and Dec. 5 received
a coupon good for a free double-double hamburger.
"What a great experience this
was," said senior Toro volleyball player Michelle Clary. "It
was exciting to see the looks on the kids faces when they tore
open the gifts. It was like they almost forgot why they were
there."
The result was a huge success.
"We got a lot of support from the
campus, local community and fans," said SAAC Advisor Lamel
Harris. "We had more toys than there were children at the
hospital. The opportunity for our student-athletes to go and
interact with the kids and see the reaction on both sides was very
special. We look forward to having the same chance again next
year."
Approximately 30 student-athletes took part
from all 11 intercollegiate sports sponsored by the Carson campus.
By all accounts, it was a time to give back to a needy community
and at the same time, spread the spirit of Christmas giving.
"I am so proud of our
student-athletes and athletic staff for envisioning the need and
then acting on this very worthy cause," said Cal State
Dominguez Hills Athletics Director Ron Prettyman. "Last year
we performed over 140 community service projects to the local
area. It is not only a way to give back to the community, but also
a way that we can help enrich the lives of our students."
