CARSON, Calif.- For the second consecutive year
the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer program landed five
players on the NSCAA/adidas NCAA II Far West Region team as
announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA).
Victor Guerrero (Century HS), Eduardo Serrano
(Toluca, Mexico) and Scott White (Sonora HS) headed the list for
the Toros by being named on the First Team. Guerrero, a junior
midfielder from Santa Ana, CA, finished the year third on the team
in scoring with 22 points on 5 goals and 12 assists. Serrano, a
junior forward who transferred to the program this year from
Humboldt State, earned his second consecutive appearance on the
all-region team - the most by any of the 2002 selections. Serrano
led CSUDH in scoring with 33 points on 15 goals and 3 assists.
White, a senior forward from La Habra, CA, was a four-year
letterman for the Toros beginning his career at the Carson campus
in 1999. Despite playing in only 19 games due to a knee injury,
White scored 16 points on 6 goals and 4 assists.
Rick Cobb (Warren HS) and Sean Silveri
(Valencia HS) were named to the Second Team. Cobb, a sophomore
midfielder from Downey, CA, played in all 23 games for the Toros
scoring 7 points on 1 goal and 5 assists. Silveri, a senior
defender from Saugus, CA, registered 4 assists in the backfield
and earned the reputation as one of the top defenders in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The five all-region players ties a school mark
set last year when the Toros advanced to its second consecutive
NCAA II National Championship game. Cal State Dominguez Hills'
representation on the all-region squad was the most by any school
in the Far West. National champ Sonoma State, who upset the Toros
in the first round of the NCAA playoffs, and CCAA rival Cal State
Bakersfield were next with four players selected. It gives CSUDH
14 all-region honoree's over the last three years and 17 during
head coach Joe Flanagan's nine-year tenure.
"It is nice to have the players
recognized for their efforts on the playing field," said
Flanagan. "They all deserve it to be sure. It's always tough
losing high-caliber senior players like Silveri and White, but it
will be nice to have three of these all-region players back for
next year."
Cal State Dominguez Hills finished the season
ranked No. 11 in the final NSCAA poll. The Toros completed the
year with an 18-4-1 overall record while winning its fourth
consecutive CCAA crown with a 13-1-0 league mark.
