| SCOUTING ALASKA-ANCHORAGE: The
Seawolves will enjoy a trip to southern California this upcoming
week. They will take on Christian Heritage College on Wednesday
night, followed by coming to the Torodome to face the Toros on
Thursday night. So far this season, UAA is 3-2 overall and 1-0
in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Four Seawolves are
scoring in double-figures on the season. They are led by Kamie
Jo Massey, who is dumping in 15.2 points per game. The Seawolves
are outscoring their opponents 64.4-60. Massey is also leading
the team on the boards as she has brought down an impressive 48
rebounds on the season. This is the fourth meeting between the
two squads, with UAA holding a slight edge at 2-1. |

TOROS TO HOST ALASKA-ANCHORAGE
The Toros will have one game this coming week as they host the
Seawolves of the University of Alaska-Anchorage. The game will be
played on Thursday, December 19 in the Torodome. First tip is
slated for 7:00 p.m. CSUDH is coming off of a 60-62 home loss to
NAIA Vanguard University last Saturday night. Thursday's contest
will mark the last home game for the Toros until January 10. They
will play three road contests, beginning with a trip south to
Christian Heritage on Saturday, December 28. The CHC game will
mark the last non conference game of the season, as they travel to
Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino for the Bronco/Coyote
series in January 3 and 4.
HEAD COACH VAN GIRARD
Coach Girard enters his fifteenth season at the helm of the Toros
basketball program. In this time, Girard has posted a 185-191
record. He has led CSUDH to two consecutive CCAA conference titles
(1994-96), and has been named CCAA Coach of the Year five times,
including three in a row (1993-1996). Girard has coached one
All-American, two All-West Region players, three CCAA MVP's and 29
all-conference players. His first win at the collegiate coaching
level came on November 25, 1988, when he led CSUDH to a 82-68
victory against Incarante Word.
A LOOK AT THE 2002-03 TOROS ROSTER
CS Dominguez Hills returns eight players from last year's squad
that went 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the CCAA conference. There are
a total of six new recruits, including two top freshmen recruits.
This season's roster features three seniors, three juniors, three
sophomores and five freshmen. The Toros are also taller this
season, with eight players at six feet tall or over. The tallest
Toros are freshman Jessica Brown (Chino, CA) and senior Kendra
Tease (Carson, CA) who measure 6-2.
TEASE RETURNS STRONG FOR THE TOROS
After sitting out the first three games for eligibility reasons,
senior Kendra Tease made her first appearance of the 2002-2003
season versus Vanguard University on Saturday. The 6-2 center got
the start and played 25 minutes, while pouring in a team-high 17
points. She was 6 of 14 (43%) from the floor and 5 of 8 (63%) from
the charity stripe, while pulling down five boards. Tease's 17
points made up 28% of the Toros scoring.
BLUE IS TAKING THE BALL AWAY
Freshman Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA) is taking the ball away
from the opponents. The guard had four steals in the Toros loss to
Vanguard University on Saturday night. She is second on the team
in steals with ten. The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's
basketball team set a new school record for steals in a game in
the win over CBU. The Toros recorded 25 steals on the night,
breaking the old record of 24 set twice in the 1983 and 1989
seasons. Freshman forward Zipporah Chase (Los Angeles, CA) and
sophomore guard Octavia Askew (Orange County, CA) led the charge
with five take-aways apiece for
CSUDH.FROM DEEP...
The Toros have been impressive from three point range so far this
season. As a squad they are 20 of 50 (40%) from the beyond the
arc. The Toros are outshooting their opponents from three point
range, 20-50 (40%) to 15-50 (30%).They are led from deep by Blue,
who is 10 of 23 (44%) from three point land. The other freshman
star Teresa Cooper (Simi Valley, CA) has hit seven of 19 attempts
from deep. The two have combined for 17 of the Toros 20 made
three-point baskets.
FRESHMEN WATCH
The Toros two freshmen, Tameka Blue and Teresa Cooper, have scored
in double-figures in all four of CSUDH's games this season. Blue
has scored a team-leading 57 points, averaging 14.3 per game,
while Cooper has scored 52 points on the season to average 13.0
ppg. The next Toro in scoring is junior Adriana Mendez (Santa Ana,
CA) who has chipped in a total of 40 season points. She had a
career-high 22 points in the 2002-03 opener, but has averaged just
six ppg since then.
