TOROS HEAD SOUTH TO TAKE ON HAWKS
The Toros will head south this Saturday, December 27 to take on
the Hawks of Christian Heritage College in their lone game of the
week. The Toros suffered a 65-59 setback to the University of
Alaska Anchorage last Thursday night. The loss was the second
straight for the Toros, so they will be looking to get a win in
this weeks contest. This will also mark the last
nonconference tilt for CSUDH, before they go full speed into CCAA
action. They have played two conference games so far, both verses
Cal State LA, where they split with the Golden Eagles. Last
season, the Toros suffered five straight conference losses before
picking up their first CCAA win over San Francisco State.
HEAD COACH VAN GIRARD
Coach Girard enters his fifteenth season at the helm of the Toros
basketball program. In this time, Girard has posted a 185-191
record. He has led CSUDH to two consecutive CCAA conference titles
(1994-96), and has been named CCAA Coach of the Year five times,
including three in a row (1993-1996). Girard has coached one
All-American, two All-West Region players, three CCAA MVPs
and 29 all-conference players. His first win at the collegiate
coaching level came on November 25, 1988, when he led CSUDH to a
82-68 victory against Incarante Word.
A LOOK AT THE 2002-03 TOROS ROSTER
CS Dominguez Hills returns eight players from last years
squad that went 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the CCAA conference.
There are a total of six new recruits, including two top freshmen
recruits. This seasons roster features three seniors, three
juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen. The Toros are also
taller this season, with eight players at six feet tall or over.
The tallest Toros are freshman Jessica Brown (Chino, CA) and
senior Kendra Tease (Carson, CA) who measure 6-2.
TEASE IS TOPS FOR TOROS
Since her return to the court two games ago, Kendra Tease has made
an immediate impact on Toros scoring. The senior center has been
the top scorer in both of the contests she played in. She scored
17 versus Vanguard and 15 versus Anchorage Alaska. So far this
season, she is leading the team with 16 points per game.
PERKINS IS BIG ON THE BOARDS
Nakeisha Perkins (Tarzana, CA) has been one of the top rebounders
throughout her four-year career with the Toros. In fact, Perkins
is eighth all time in career rebounding, averaging 7.1 rebounds
per game. Just five games into the 2002-2003 season, the senior
center has pulled down nine offensive boards and 23 defensive
boards for a season total of 32. She is leading the squad with 6.4
rebounds per game.
THE COOPER CONNECTION
Freshman Teresa Cooper (Simi Valley, CA) does not seem to be
playing like a freshman. The guard is second on the team in
scoring, averaging 13 ppg. But more impressive is her ability to
connect from three point range. Cooper has made 10 of 24 (41%)
attempts from deep. She nailed three of those in this past weeks
game verses University of Alaska Anchorage.
TAKING IT AWAY
Opponents who face the Toros are having trouble keeping
possession of the ball. The Toros are averaging 14.2 steals per
game, compared to their opponents who are recording 8.8 spg.
Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA) is leading the charge. The sophomore
has a team-leading 19 steals on the season, for 3.4 spg.
DISHING IT OUT
Freshman Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA) knows how to dish it
out. The guard has a team-leading 23 assists on season, to average
just under five dishes a game.
