TOROS HUMBLED BY TOP-RANKED HUMBOLDT STATE, 105-68:
Five Humboldt State players scored in double figures, led by Austin Nichols 28 points, to lead top-ranked Humboldt State to a 105-68 non-conference win last Monday night over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Torodome. Humboldt State, which came into the game with the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division II, elevates to 9-0 on the year. Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 3-4 on the young season. The game started a bit slow with both teams combining for 25 points in the first ten minutes. Down 18-7 midway through the first half, CSUDH went on a 8-0 run to trim the lead to 18-15 on an offensive rebound and put-back by Justin Goree (Fairfield, CA) with 6:42 left. The Lumberjacks responded with a 20-5 run to take control of the game, 38-20, with just over three minutes left in the period. HSU would go on to take an 18-point lead into the intermission, 46-28. Humboldt State came out hot in the second half opening up the period with a 10-0 run to take a 28-point lead. The Lumberjacks never looked back from there building leads as much as 40 points late in the game before settling for the 105-68 final. The 'Jacks shot a blazing 72% in the second half making 21 of its 29 shot attempts. Cal State Dominguez Hills was led by seniors Goree and Andre' Brown (San Jose, CA) with 18 points each. Brown also pulled down a team-best five rebounds. As a team, CSUDH shot 43% in the game (25-58) including 4-13 from beyond the 3-point stripe.

TOROS LOOK TO START NEW YEAR WITH FIRST ROAD WIN:
The Toros are looking to break the new year in on a positive note by earning its first road win of the young season. The team is 0-3 thus far with losses at Cal Baptist, CS Monterey Bay and Cal State LA. Up until Monday, the squad was perfect at home until it ran into No.1-ranked Humboldt State. CSUDH is now 3-1 at home.

TOROS SCORING LEADERS:
Senior forward Justin Goree leads the Toros in scoring pouring in 14.6 ppg and is second on the squad hitting 48% of his shots (41-85). He also paces the team from beyond the arc making 43% (13-30) of his 3-point shots. Forward Andre Brown is scoring at a 13.6 ppg clip and leads the team on the boards grabbing 6.0 rpg. Ryan Meilleur rounds out a trio of players averaging in double figures chipping in 10.9 ppg.

GOREE JUST KEEPS GOING:
Justin Goree has begun his final year in a Toros uniform in style. The 6-foot-4 senior has individual highs in points (23), made shots (10), 3-PT field goals (4), and 3-PT attempts (9).

INJURY PLAGUE CONTINUES, MORALES OUT FOR SEASON:
The injury bug has hit the Toros again, this time resulting in the loss of junior point-guard Eduardo Morales (Los Angeles/Fremont HS). On Dec. 21, Morales suffered a left knee ACL injury and is lost for the rest of the season. Morales will undergo surgery in the next few weeks and will begin rehab for next year. It is the second ACL injury of the 2002-03 season for the Toros. In the preseason, the program lost promising 6-foot-5 freshman forward Michael Roche (Lakewood/Long Beach Poly HS) with the same injury.

FRESHMAN GROWING PAINS:
Of the three freshmen players that are on the active roster, Ryan Meilleur (Lakewood/Artesia HS) has seen the most time on the court averaging just over 24 minutes a game. The 6-foot-8 center has taken advantage of the time averaging 10.9 points and 5.3 rebounds a game, ranking him third and second on the squad. Meilleur leads the team making 58% of his shots from the floor (29-50). Frosh standout Saul Lankster (Long Beach/Centennial HS) has experienced more growing pains than Meilleur while trying to adjust to the college game. The 6-foot-3 guard is seeing more time on the floor and is beginning to show promise. Freshman Jamel Gay (Carson/Artesia HS) has only played in three games due to an early season injury. But the 6-foot-1 guard is starting to show why he was one of the top prep guards in the state. Against Humboldt State, Gay scored 9 points in 15 minutes shooting 4-8 from the field.
