SCOUTING REPORT

CAL POLY POMONA Cal Poly is off to a slow 2-5 start. Their wins came over Azusa Pacific and Westminster College. The win over WC ended a three-game skid for the defending national champions. CPP is 0-2 in CCAA action, suffering both losses to Cal State San Bernardino. Both of those games were close with the Broncos losing by four points in the first contest and six points in the second meeting. CPP is led on the season by Marissa Lattin and Alicia Hernandez, who are averaging 15 points per game. The Broncos are tough on the boards, pulling down 39.3 per game, compared to their opponents who are recording 37.3 rpg. Hernandez is also leading CPP on the glass with 6.4 rpg.This is the 54th meeting between the two schools with the Broncos dominating the series at 46-7. The last time the teams met was on February 8, 2001 when CPP posted a 83-62 win over the Toros.

CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO The Coyotes are one of the hottest teams in the conference with a 6-1 overall record and a 2-0 CCAA slate. CSUSB has not dropped a game since their 59-62 overtime loss to Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The Coyotes are outscoring their opponents 437-383, averaging just over 62 points per game. Kamesha Bell is leading the Coyote scoring with 14.0 ppg. CSUSB is pulling down an impressive 42.9 rebounds per game. They also are taking the ball away from their foes as they have forced 65 steals on the season. Three Coyotes have recorded double-figure steals on the year so far. CSUSB is consistent from the floor as they are connecting on 40% of their field goals. Saturday will mark the 27th meeting with the Toros holding a 15-11 lead. The last time the teams met was on February 9, 2001, when the Toros defeated CSUSB 55-54.

TOROS HEAD BACK INTO CCAA ACTION
After a convincing 75-55 win over Christian Heritage on December 28, the Toros look in top form as they head back into CCAA play this coming weekend. CSUDH is 1-1 in conference play, as they split the Cal State LA series. This weekend the Toros are off to Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. From now on, it is a dog fight for position in the CCAA standings, as non-conference play has ended for the Toros. CSUDH went 2-2 on their non-conference schedule with wins over Cal Baptist University and Christian Heritage College and losses to Vanguard University and the University of Alaska Anchorage.

HEAD COACH VAN GIRARD
Coach Girard enters his fifteenth season at the helm of the Toros basketball program. In this time, Girard has posted a 185-191 record. He has led CSUDH to two consecutive CCAA conference titles (1994-96), and has been named CCAA Coach of the Year five times, including three in a row (1993-1996). Girard has coached one All-American, two All-West Region players, three CCAA MVP's and 29 all-conference players. His first win at the collegiate coaching level came on November 25, 1988, when he led CSUDH to a 82-68 victory against Incarnate Word.

A LOOK AT THE 2002-03 TOROS ROSTER
CS Dominguez Hills returns eight players from last year's squad that went 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the CCAA conference. There are a total of six new recruits, including two top freshmen recruits. This season's roster features three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen. The Toros are also taller this season, with eight players at six feet tall or over. The tallest Toros are freshman Jessica Brown (Chino, CA) and senior Kendra Tease (Carson, CA) who measure 6-2.

COOPER CHALLENGES RECORD
Freshman Teresa Cooper (Simi Valley, CA) nailed six three pointers in the Toros 75-55 win over Christian Heritage. She was just two shy of tying the school record for made three point field goals in a game of eight set in the 1993 season. So far this season, Cooper has been impressive from three point land as she has connected on 16 of 35 attempts. Cooper is averaging 2.6 3 PT field goals per game. With 20 games remaining, she should look to come close to or break the season 3 PT field goal record of 72.

PERKINS IS BIG ON THE BOARDS
Nakeisha Perkins (Tarzana, CA) has been one of the top rebounders throughout her four-year career with the Toros. In fact, Perkins is eighth all time in career rebounding, averaging 7.1 rebounds per game. Just six games into the 2002-2003 season, the senior center has pulled down 12 offensive boards and 25 defensive boards for a season total of 37. She is leading the squad with 6.2 rebounds per game.

ASKEW IS TAKING IT AWAY
Opponents who face the Toros are having trouble keeping possession of the ball. The Toros are averaging 14.2 steals per game, compared to their opponents who are recording 8.5 spg. Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA) is leading the charge. The sophomore has a team-leading 20 steals on the season, for 3.4 spg.

BLUE IS RED HOT FOR CSUDH
Freshman Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA) is on fire for CSUDH. Blue is one of the best players on the squad, leading the team or at the top of every statistical category. She is leading the Toros in scoring at 14.7 points per game, has connected on the most three throw attempts 28 of 36 (78%), dished out the most assists 28, picked up the second most steals 17, and made the second most field goals 24. She has lead the Toros in scoring two times on the season, and has scored in double figures in all six outings.
