SAN BERNARDINO -- Seniors Bobby Burries and
Lance Ray combined for 39 points and Ray pulled down a game-high
11 rebounds as Cal State San Bernardino won its fifth straight
game, a 62-50 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills in a
California Collegiate Athletic Association game before 564 fans in
Coussoulis Arena.
Burries had a hot hand early and finished with
a game high 20 points on eight of 20 shooting after being inserted
in the lineup early in the first half. Ray had a solid 19 points
on six of 11 shooting from the floor and battled the Toros on the
boards. Point guard T.K. Reed finished with 10 points, including
eight free throws, and dished off six assists.
The Coyotes improved to 3-1 in the CCAA and
remain tied for first place as they climbed over the .500 mark for
the first time this season at 5-4 with all the wins coming at
home. The Toros loss was their third in four CCAA games and they
are 3-6 on the season.
The Toros were in the hunt early, earning a tie
at 13-13 with nine minutes left in the first half but the Coyotes
outscored them 22-12, scoring eight of the last 10 points before
intermission for a 35-25 advantage.
The closest Dominguez Hills got in the second
half was six points at 47-41 with six minutes left in the game.
Forced to foul, the Toros sent the Coyotes to the line to try 14
free throws in the final 1:42 of the game and CSUSB made eight of
them.
Justin Goree led the Toros with 10 points but
was only four of 15 from the field. Geovanny Aispuro had nine
points and Charles Logan chipped in a team-high eight rebounds
along with six points. Freshman center Ryan Meilleur had six
points , six rebounds and three steals.
The Toros hit 42 percent from the field (21 of
50) to just 37.5 percent for the Coyotes (18 of 48), but CSUSB won
it at the line, sinking 21 of 35 free throws while the Toros had
just six chances at the line and made only one.
The Toros outrebounded the Coyotes 34-33, but
the Coyotes forced 18 turnovers and made 12 steals.
The are at home next weekend, hosting UC San
Diego Friday and Grand Canyon Saturday. |
