Toros squander 10 point halftime lead
January 10, 2003

Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.- Less than one week after upsetting CS San Bernardino, one of the top teams in the CCAA, Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-5, 2-3 CCAA) lost a conference game to winless UC San Diego (1-9, 1-4 CCAA) tonight in the Torodome. The Toros, who were unable to pick up their first home win of the season, suffered from poor shooting and were outrebounded by the Tritons, as they went on to win 57-56.

The Toros opened the first half strong, and built a 16 point lead with a little over six minutes remaining in the half. But UCSD kept coming at CSUDH. A three point shot by Triton Karina Siam started an 11-0 run for UCSD, while the Toros went cold from the field, scoreless in three minutes of action.

CSUDH had a 10 point lead coming out of the break, but the Tritons had another streak in them as they outscored CSUDH 13-8 in the first seven minutes of play. The 38-37 lead was the first lead for UCSD since the 15:10 mark in the first half.

Karina Siam and Ali Ginn, who had five points in the first half, put in 14 and 11 points respectively in the second. In fact, Ginn scored six of those 11 points in the final two minutes of play to put UCSD ahead 57-54 with 30 seconds on the clock. The Toros would drive, hoping for a three point play. Two Toros attempted to make the baskets with Adriana Mendez converting for two at the buzzer. But without the foul the effort was not enough as they fell by one.

CSUDH was cold from the floor, connecting on only 38% of their shots from the field. Toro scoring was led by freshman guard Tameka Blue, who had a team-high 15 points on the night. Blue hit three shots from beyond the arc, all in the last seven minutes of play. Mendez was the only other Toro to finish in double figures with 14.

UCSD was led by Siam and Ginn who closed out the game with 19 and 16 points, respectively.

The Tritons dominated the glass outrebouding the Toros 37-28. They were also on fire from the charity stripe converting on 13 of 14 attempts (93%).

The Toros will look to rebound from the loss and attempt to pick up their first home win as they take on Grand Canyon University tomorrow night in the Torodome.
