CARSON, Calif.- It was a standout night for
freshman Tameka Blue who had a season and career-best 25 points in
the Cal State Dominguez Hills 63-45 rout of Grand Canyon
University. With the win, the Toros even up their record at 5-5
overall and 3-3 in the CCAA, while the Antelopes fall to 5-6
overall and 2-4 in CCAA action. This was also CSUDH's first home
win of the 2002-2003 season.
The Toros dominated the contest from the first
tip. After an 11-11 tie five minutes into play, the Toros scored
eight unanswered points and held the 'Lopes scoreless for over
three minutes of action. Blue nailed a short jump shot to extend
the CSUDH lead to eight. GCU was able to get a pair of free throws
from Samantha Pimentel to cut the lead to six as the teams went
into the half with CSUDH leading 29-23. Blue, who connected on two
attempts from deep, posted 12 points in the first twenty, which
was almost half of the Toros total scoring.
The second half was all CSUDH. The Toros were
consistent from the field, converting 46% of their attempts.
Freshman guard Teresa Cooper, who was kept to just four points in
the first 20, started things off right by nailing one from deep.
CSUDH outscored their opponents by 12 in the second half, mostly
due to the fact that the 'Lopes were held to a 36% field goal
percentage, and Cooper and Blue combined for 24 of those 34 second
half points scored by the Toros.
Grand Canyon had two players, Lauren Westerman
and Leah Smith score in double-figures with 11 and 10
respectively.
Crystal Stephens had a game-high ten boards on
the night.
Blue had a stellar outing. She had 25 points
going 7 of 11 from the field, including connecting on 3 of 4 from
three point range. Blue was also a perfect 8 of 8 from the charity
stripe. Cooper finished the night with 15 points, 12 of those
coming in the second half of play.
The Toros look to pick up another home win as
they take on San Francisco State University in a CCAA matchup
Friday night in the Torodome. First tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
