SAN FRANCISCO ST. GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE IN
VICTORY OVER TOROS:
San Francisco State drilled 12 three-point baskets in a game
they never trailed to go on for a 75-62 CCAA win over host Cal
State Dominguez Hills Friday night in the Torodome. Both squad's
traded baskets during the first 10 minutes of the game before San
Francisco went on a 17-8 run to take a 13-point lead, 32-19, with
5:12 left in the half. CSUDH shot a blazing 67% (11-17) from the
field in the first half, but it didn't matter as the Gators were
hot from long-range making eight 3-point baskets. SFSU would
settle for a nine-point halftime lead, 36-27. San Francisco jumped
out to a 14-point lead twice early in the second half, but the
Toros would come back both times to trim the Gator lead to seven
points, 46-39, with 12:55 remaining on a two free throws by senior
forward Mike Crawford (Pacoima, CA/Simi Valley HS). Cal State
Dominguez Hills closed the gap to four points, 50-46, after a
Justin Goree (Fairfield, CA) three-point shot and a layup from
Lamar Lawrence (Bishop Montgomery HS), off a nice no-look pass
from freshman guard Jamel Gay (Artesia HS) with 9:59 left in the
game. The Gators had an answer though, going on a 16-3 run over
the next five minutes to take its biggest lead of the game at 17
points, 66-49, with 5:09 left. CSUDH would get no closer than 13
points down the stretch. The Toros were paced by Crawford with 19
points on 6-11 shooting from the floor. Junior Malik Harris
(Oakland, CA) led the team on the boards with seven rebounds.
SONOMA STATE SENDS TOROS TO SECOND STRAIGHT
HOME LOSS:
Sonoma State sent CSUDH to a 59-47 CCAA loss Saturday night in
the Torodome. SSU went into the intermission with a nine-point
lead, 30-21, thanks mostly to 6'10" center Chris Oliver's 11
first half points. The Seawolves came out strong after the break
to take a 14-point lead, 40-26, with 14:41 left. The Toros
answered back cutting the lead down to five points with a 9-0 run
over the following 3:03 capped by a 3-point shot from Justin Goree
with 11:38 remaining. Sonoma took advantage of two turnovers and
the Toros going 1-for-5 from the floor over the next five minutes
to forge its lead back up to 14 points, 52-38, with 6:36 left.
CSUDH got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way en route to
its second consecutive home defeat. Michael Crawford and Goree
paced the Toro squad with 12 points each. Crawford led the team
with four rebounds.

YOUTH SERVED:
The Toro freshman class is being well served with valuable
playing time that will only help them adjust to the
highly-competitive NCAA II schedule. The program starts two
freshman guard Jamel Gay and 6-foot-8 center Ryan Meilleur
(Artesia HS). Gay, who slowly worked into the rotation after
beginning the year on the disabled list with a fractured foot,
started in the Sonoma State game and played 27 minutes. Meilleur
has started in 10-of-13 games this year and is averaging 23
minutes per game. Saul Lankster (Compton Centennial HS), the last
freshman on the active roster, comes off the bench and is playing
over 15 minutes per game. Over the weekend, the trio of frosh
players averaged a combined 47 minutes per tilt.
BACK-TO-BACK HOME LOSSES A FIRST:
Up until this last weekend, the Toros had not lost
back-to-back games in the Torodome in 2002-03. That mini streak is
now over with losses to San Francisco State and Sonoma State.
CSUDH is now 4-4 at home after being 3-1 at one point. The squad
has now lost three of its last four games in Carson.
FIRST ROAD WIN WON'T COME EASY:
CSUDH is still in search of its first road win this year. The
Toros are 0-5 away from home in 2002-03 and that first "Road-W"
is never easy. This weekend a road victory may be even more
elusive as the Toros have not won in Bakersfield since the 1992
season. Cal State Stanislaus won't be any easier, but at least the
squad has won a game in Turlock this decade. The Toros last
defeated the Warriors up north on Feb. 11, 2000 and are 5-3
against the NorCal squad since they joined the CCAA in 1998.
NO REBOUND AGAINST SEAWOLVES:
Saturday night a big Sonoma lineup, featuring a 6-foot-10
center, cleaned up the boards holding the Toros to a season-low 23
rebounds. One of the Toros bright spots all year, other than its
freshman class, during this current 4-9 season has been its
rebounding. As a team, CSUDH is outrebounding the opposition by
three boards on average and is the top team in the CCAA holding
opponents to just 30 boards a game.
CRAWFORD COMING AROUND:
Forward Michael Crawford, who has been battling nagging
injuries all year, poured in a season-best 19 points Friday night
against San Francisco State. The 6-foot-5 senior shot 6-11 from
the floor and went 7-8 from the foul line. Crawford has now scored
double figures in three straight games and four of his last six.
LOGAN'S RUN:
Guard Charles Logan (Moreno Valley/Valley View HS) enjoyed his
best game yet in a Toro uniform Friday against San Francisco
State. The 6-foot-3 junior scored a season-best eight points in
only 14 minutes on 4-5 shooting from the field. He also added four
rebounds in the losing cause. Prior to Friday, Logan's season-high
was seven points in the first two games of the year against
Vanguard University and Cal Baptist.
MEILLEUR LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK:
Ryan Meilleur had a rough weekend scoring a total of eight
points on a combined 4-of-13 shooting from the field. Meilleur
continues to lead the squad with a .533 shooting percentage.
However, the frosh big-man is now averaging a season-low 9.2 ppg
and 4.8 rpg. He will look to get back on track this weekend in
Bakersfield and Turlock facing two of the premier centers in the
league in CSUB's Terri Miller (8.8 rpg) and CSUS's Bernard
McIntosh (8.9 rpg).
TORO INDIVIDUAL LEADERS:
Goree continues to pace the team in scoring averaging 12.9
ppg. The senior forward is staying hot from beyond the 3-point arc
shooing .432 (24-53) from long-range. Goree is playing in a
team-high 36 minutes per game. Meilleur leads the team in blocks
(14), steals (16) and FG% (.533). Senior forward Andre' Brown (San
Jose, CA) leads the team on the glass grabbing 4.9 rebounds a
game, a team-best 25 on the offensive end. He is near the
double-digit mark in scoring averaging 9.0 points. Crawford now
leads the squad at the charity stripe making .675 (27-40) of his
attempts.
