BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. -- The Cal State Bakersfield men’s basketball team bounced back from a sluggish first half with a dominating second half in a 60-44 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.

Dominguez Hills played aggressive defense early and kept CSUB’s margin to 23-21 at the half. But a young Dominguez squad, which featured two freshmen who played all 40 minutes Friday, couldn’t handle the increased tempo the Roadrunners brought to the floor in second half.

After the Toros tied the game on their first possession of the second half, CSUB responded with a 12-0 run to take command at 37-25. Dominguez Hills turned the ball over seven times in that run as CSUB’s trapping defense created havoc in the Toro offense.

CSUB steadily increased its lead until it got as high as 23 points with five minutes to play. The Toros scored just eight points over the first 15 minutes of the second half.

Junior center Terri Miller (Brooklyn, NY/Fresno CC) tied the CCAA season high with 16 rebounds Friday night (Miller also pulled down 16 boards against Central Washington). He added a game-high 15 points. Senior guard Billy Speer (Redding, Calif./Shasta JC) broke a short shooting slump by nailing 3-of-3 three pointers in the second half to finish with 10 points.

Freshman Jamel Gay and junior Andre Brown led the Toros with 10 points apiece.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-10, 2-7) travels north to play at Cal State Stanislaus Saturday. CSUB (11-3, 6-3 CCAA) returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Cal State L.A. in the Icardo Center.
