QUICK RECAP:
CSUDH lost both its road CCAA games last weekend at Cal State
Bakersfield (44-60) and Cal State Stanislaus (63-76). The Toros
are on a four-game losing streak and are now 4-11 overall and 2-8
in conference play.
BAKERSFIELD USES SECOND HALF SURGE TO BEAT
TOROS:
The Toros played #22-ranked Cal State Bakersfield tough for
the first 20 minutes and went into the half down by two points,
23-21, at Bakersfield. However, CSUB used a second-half surge to
take control early to go on for the 60-44 win. Senior forward
Michael Crawford's (Pacoima/Simi Valley HS) dunk to begin the
second period tied the score, 23-23. But seven CSUDH turnovers
over the next five minutes, and a 23-3 run helped the Roadrunners
build a double-digit lead that the Toros would never be able to
break. CSUB led by as many as 23 points over the final 15 minutes.
The Toros went on a small run over the final minutes to settle for
the 16-point loss. In the game, the Toros shot 32% (17-53)
compared to 40% (20-50) for the 'Runners. A big disadvantage was
at the foul line where CSUB visited 32 times compared to the Toros
seven trips. Freshman point guard Jamel Gay (Carson/Artesia HS)
and senior forward Andre Brown (San Jose, CA) paced the squad
offensively with 10 points each. Crawford pulled down a team-high
eight boards.
TOROS DROP FOURTH IN A ROW IN LOSS TO CS
STANISLAUS:
Senior forward Andre Brown's first double-double of the season
wasn't enough to lead the Toros to their first road win of the
year last Saturday night in Turlock as CSU Stanislaus beat Cal
State Dominguez Hills, 76-63. Brown recorded a career-high on both
ends of the court, pouring in a game-high 20 points and pulling
down 14 boards in the losing cause. Junior forward Abel Velarde
(Cudahy/Bell HS) came off the bench to add 10 points on 4-5
shooting from the floor. CSUS took an 11-point lead into the
break, 34-23, after shooting 46% (11-24) from the field and
holding the Toros to 37% (9-24). Cal State Dominguez Hills charged
back in the second half and pulled within one, at 43-42, with 14
minutes to play when Velarde made the front-end of a one-and-one
at the foul line. During the 15-4 Toro run, Brown scored seven of
his game-high 20 points. Brown was able to pull his team within
one again three minutes later with a free throw, but that was as
close as CSUDH would get the rest of the way. Stanislaus used a
19-9 run to pull away and put the game away with 1:31 remaining.
FREE THROW SHOOTING GETTING BETTER:
Going into play last weekend, the Toros were only shooting 54%
as a team at the foul line. But CSUDH showed improvement over the
weekend shooting 71% both nights (20-28). The Toros are now
shooting 59% from the charity stripe as a team with hopes that it
SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS:
The Toro freshman class, while one of the best on the West
Coast, is having to learn on the job and in the process are taking
their knocks. Freshman Ryan Meilleur (Lakewood/Artesia HS) is
proving game-by-game that he will be one of the premier big-men in
future years in the CCAA. In 36 minutes of play over the weekend,
Meilleur shot 40% (4-10) from the field, grabbed four boards and
blocked two shots in the Bakersfield game. The 6-foot-8 center is
third on the team averaging 8.5 ppg and and 4.5 rpg. He leads the
team in blocks (16) and steals (16). Freshman guard Jamel Gay
(Carson/Artesia HS) has started the last three games at the point
and is gaining valuable experience. Though he committed nine
turnovers over the weekend, Gay shot 50% (5-10) from the field and
dished out five assists in a combined 42 minutes. He was also 3-4
from the foul line.
BROWN TURNS IT UP WITH CAREER-HIGH:
Andre Brown had a career-night offensively and defensively in
the Toros loss against Cal State Stanislaus. Brown make 7-15 shots
from the floor, including 5-7 from the foul line, for 20 points.
He also grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, six of them on the
offensive glass. In 35 minutes, Brown also added a team-high four
assists and a block.
ROAD WIN ELUSIVE:
The Toros are now 0-7 on the road with its two losses this
past weekend. CSUDH will look to gain that first road victory this
weekend, but once again, it won't be easy. It never is in the
CCAA. The team will look to win for the first time ever at UC
Davis on Friday followed by the always tough Chico State.
MEILLEUR'S BLOCK PARTY:
With two more blocks over the weekend, Ryan Meilleur now has
16 on the year which rank him fourth in the CCAA with a 1.07
blocks per game average. If he keeps up the current pace, Meilleur
would finish with 29 blocks, just eight shy of the school record
of 37 set by former Toro great Anthony Blackmon during the 1988-89
season.
I'LL TAKE ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE:
The Toros finally got its second double-double of the year
when Brown connected for 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds over
the weekend. Prior to that, Meilleur was the only other player to
record the twin-killing and that was in the season opener when the
6-foot-8 center scored 23 points and registered 10 rebounds
against Vanguard University on Nov. 22.
DEFENSE NOT THE PROBLEM:
Cal State Dominguez Hills' current problems are not due to its
defense. It has been the offense that has yet to get on track. The
Toro defense is fourth in the CCAA holding conference opponents to
only 63.9 points a game. The culprit is the offense which is only
averaging 55.3 points a tilt.
TORO INDIVIDUAL LEADERS:
Goree continues to pace the team in scoring averaging 12.3
ppg. The senior forward is cooling down a little, but still leads
the squad from beyond the 3-point arc shooting .414 (29-70). Goree
is playing in a team-high 36 minutes per game. Meilleur leads the
team in blocks (16), steals (16) and FG% (.520). Senior forward
Andre' Brown (San Jose, CA) leads the team on the glass grabbing
5.3 rebounds a game, a team-best 31 on the offensive end. He is
near the double-digit mark in scoring averaging 9.8 points.
Crawford leads the squad at the charity stripe making .675 (27-40)
of his attempts.
