February 8, 2003

Complete Box Score

LA MIRADA, Calif.--The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team suffered its first loss of the young season Saturday as Biola University came back to beat the Toros 8-5 in a non-conference affair in La Mirada.

CSUDH (3-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second on a two-run single by catcher Efren Esparza (Dominguez HS) and a Biola error.

Biola answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun then took the lead for good in the third with four more runs to take a 5-3 lead.

The Eagles took an 8-3 advantage in the fourth inning with a 2-run homer and a RBI single.

The Toros plated two runs in the eighth to account for the final margin. In that inning, designated hitter Frank Perez (Banning HS) had a groundout RBI and Tony Marquez (Roseville, CA) knocked in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Senior starter Aldo Silva (1-1) took the loss on the mound for the Toros. Silva went the first six innings allowing eight runs, only four earned, on eight hits. Reliever Brian Cortes (Century HS) pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits while striking out two.

Offensively, CSUDH got two hits a piece by third baseman Ruben Salazar (St. John Bosco HS) and Esparza.

The Toros are back in non-conference action on Monday, hosting Vanguard University. First pitch is slated for 2 PM.
