CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills shot a
blazing 58% in the second half to rally from an eight-point second
half deficit and defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 67-62, in California
Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday night in the
Torodome.
With the win, Cal State Dominguez Hills
elevates to 6-13 overall and 4-10 in CCAA play. Cal Poly Pomona
snaps a four-game win streak and drops to 14-5 overall and 10-4 in
league action.
Pomona took a five-point halftime lead into the
break and came out in the second period and built an eight-point
lead twice in the first six minutes. CSUDH was down, 42-34 at
13:36, before going on a 7-1 run over the next 2:26 to trim the
Bronco lead down to two points, 43-41, with 11:10 remaining.
The Toros then used a 7-4 spurt over the next
3:29 to take its first lead of the second half, 48-47, after
forward Lamar Lawrence (Bishop Montgomery HS) hit one of two free
throws with 7:41 on the clock.
After three lead changes over the next three
and a half minutes, Pomona went up 56-54 on a layup by Ron
Strange. The Broncos built its lead to four points twice, the last
60-56, on a steal and layup by Jonathan Boyd with 2:42 on the
clock.
Down 62-59 with 1:33 remaining, freshman center
Ryan Meilleur (Artesia HS), who sat most of the second half after
going down with a knee injury, made it 62-61 after an offensive
rebound and put-back with 1:17 left.
With :36 seconds left, Meilleur grabbed another
offensive board and was fouled sending him to the line where he
made both shots to put the Toros up for good, 63-62. Meilleur and
Lawrence hit two more free throws each down the stretch and Pomona
missed two three-point attempts resulting in the final, 67-62.
Senior forward Andre' Brown (San Jose, CA) led
four Toro players in double figures with 14 points. Senior Justin
Goree (Fairfield, CA) added 12 points while Meilleur finished with
11 and a game-high 11 points. Junior guard Charles Logan (Moreno
Valley, CA) came off the bench to score 10 points.
For Pomona, Jeff Bonds had a game-high 19
points and led the team on the boards with seven. No other Bronco
finished with double-figures offensively.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is back in action
next weekend when it begins a four-game road trip at Grand Canyon
on Friday, Feb. 14. First-tip is set for 8 PM.
