CARSON, Calif.--Visiting Vanguard University
dealt the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team its first loss
on the new Toro Field, 10-0, in non-conference action Monday,
highlighted by a two home run, 5-RBI performance from VU's Matt
Tisthammer.
With the win, Vanguard improves to 6-2 on the
season while the loss drops the Toros to 3-2.
The Lions roughed up Toro starter Chris Ingstad
(Lakewood HS) in his first start of the season. VU jumped out to
an early 3-0 lead in the first on a 3-run home run from pitcher
Joe Carnahan.
In the second with one out, Ingstad gave up
three consecutive singles before Tisthammer hit the first grand
slam ever at Toro Field. Tisthammer's shot was a long blast over
the left field fence giving the Lions a 7-0 lead.
Freshman LHP Ryan Owen (W. Torrance HS) came on
in the third and allowed an unearned run on an RBI double from C
Jonathan Bower scoring Justin Millward who had reached earlier on
an error.
Tisthammer then hit his second homer of the
game, a one-out solo shot deep to left field, to make it 9-0.
Vanguard scored its final run of the game in the sixth on a
sacrifice fly from Millward plating Jason Searle who reached on a
double earlier in the inning.
Carnahan (1-0) kept the Toro bats in check all
game to earn his first win of the year. The left-handed pitcher
tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout, walking four batters
while striking out five.
Tisthammer finished the day going 3-5 at the
plate with five RBI and three runs scored. Carnahan finished with
three RBI while CF Scott Zine and 2B Robert Cruz each had two hits
on the day.
For the Toros, Ingstad (0-1) suffered the loss
going only two innings, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits.
Owen went three innings in relief allowing one earned run on three
hits while striking out three. RHP Larry Robles (Mary Star of the
Sea HS) was impressive in relief striking out four Vanguard
batters in two innings of relief.
The Toros will begin California Collegiate
Athletic Association action this week travelling to Cal State San
Bernardino for single games on Thursday and Friday. Both games are
scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch. |
