PHOENIX, Ariz.—Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated Grand Canyon, 62-49, on Friday night in Antelope Gym. The ‘Lopes were leading 25-24 at the break, but the visiting Toros took over just minutes into the second half and never looked back. With the win Dominguez Hills improves to 6-13 overall and 5-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while Canyon drops to 6-14 overall and 3-12 in the CCAA.

Grand Canyon’s senior wing Leah Smith (Bakersfield, CA/Centennial HS) and Dominguez Hill’s first-year guard Tameka Blue (Watson Villa, CA/Santa Cruz HS) each tallied 10 first-half points.

With less than 16 minutes to go in regulation the Toros began to pull away, fueled by Blue’s 17 points and five assists the ‘Lopes had no chance as CSUDH took home the win.

Also contributing to the CSUDH victory was sophomore guard Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham HS) with 14 points and nine rebounds, while junior guard Monique Marquez (Rialto, CA/Eisenhower HS) added 11 points and six boards in the win.

Leading Grand Canyon in the loss was Smith with 15 points. GCU junior wing Crystal Stephens (Roseburg, OR/Roseburg HS) was impressive at the boards pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds, while chipping in nine points.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will continue on to UC San Diego with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. in La Jolla, CA. Grand Canyon will host Cal State L.A. tomorrow, Saturday, February 15, with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. in Antelope Gym.
