UC San Diego defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball action at UCSD’s RIMAC Arena on Saturday night, 71-59, giving head coach Greg Lanthier his 100th win in charge of the Tritons.

UCSD led the entire first half, building an 11-2 bulge before a late 9-0 run by the Toros put the score at 30-28 in favor of the home side at halftime.

The Tritons were ahead for almost the entire second half as well. Cal State Dominguez Hills briefly held one-point leads on two occasions early in the period after tying the game at 30-30 to open the half on a basket by senior Michael Crawford. UCSD regained the advantage with just over 16 minutes to play, at 37-36, on a lay-up by junior C.J. Duffaut, and never looked back.

Duffaut finished with a team-high 12 points, pacing five Tritons in double figures. Juniors Ryan Rikansrud and Sean Crawford, sophomore Jordan Watkins and freshman Matthew Sweany all had 11 points.

Junior Andre’ Brown scored a game-high 15 points for Cal State Dominguez Hills while fellow third-year player Abel Velarde posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Crawford had 14 points off the bench.

With the win, UCSD snaps a nine-game losing streak and improves its record to 5-16 overall, 4-12 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills drops to 6-15 overall, an identical 4-12 in league play.

CSUDH hits the road again next weekend with stops at Sonoma State Friday night and San Francisco State Saturday night.
