Sophomore Margaret Johnson finished with
game-highs of 14 points and 16 rebounds as the UC San Diego womens
basketball team edged visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 49-48,
at UCSDs RIMAC Arena Saturday night.
UCSD was up by as much as 13 points in the
first half, but the Toros went on a 9-0 run and trailed just 27-24
at the break.
The game was tied at 44-44 when Triton junior
Ali Ginn hit a three-pointer to give her side the lead for good
with 4:05 left to play. The teams traded baskets before Toro
sophomore Octavia Askew brought the visitors within one with 49
seconds remaining on the clock. Junior Monique Marquezs
last-second three-point effort missed the mark as the Tritons
escaped with the victory.
Senior Nicholle Bromley notched a career high
in rebounds, grabbing 12 boards. She also had eight points and
team-highs of four assists and four steals. Sophomore Stacy
Gallagher-Bolton provided 10 points.
Joi Cooper was the lone player in double
figures for Cal State Dominguez Hills, finishing with 11 points.
Askew produced nine points and seven rebounds while senior
Nakeisha Perkins contributed seven points, a team-high eight
rebounds, and four steals.
With the victory, the Tritons improved their
record to 7-14 overall, 7-9 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills
dropped to 6-14 overall, 5-11 in league play.
CSUDH hits the road again next weekend with
stops at Sonoma State Friday night and San Francisco State
Saturday night.
