TOROS HEAD OUT ON THE ROAD FOR THE LAST
TIME
After splitting on the road this past weekend, the Toros will
hit the road for the last time this weekend as they head north for
the San Francisco State/Sonoma State series. CSUDH will close out
the 2002-2003 season at home in two weeks. So far this year, the
Toros have been a little better on the road. The Toros have won
five of eleven away games, compared to two of nine home games. The
last CSUDH home win was on February 7, 2003, when CSUDH beat CSUSB
in the Torodome.
BLUE LIKES THE 'LOPES
Tameka Blue (Watsonville, CA) has done it again. The freshman
sensation had a season-high 27 points in the Toros 62-49 victory
over Grand Canyon University. The last time that the Toros
defeated GCU, Blue also came up big with 25 points. So in two
meetings, Blue has scored 52 points to average 26 ppg versus the
'Lopes
FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE
It is hard to figure out why teams would foul freshman phenom
Tameka Blue. Blue has gone to the charity stripe 90 times so far
this season, which is almost 20 more attempts than any other Toro.
Blue has connected on 72 of those 90 attempts to lead the squad
with 80% accuracy from the line.
COOPER HAS BIG NIGHT
The other Cooper had a season-best night in the Toros one
point loss to UCSD on Saturday night. Joi Cooper (Chapperal HS), a
freshman guard, had a team-high 11 points on the night. She is
averaging 3.0 ppg.
ASKEW ADDS TO HER SEASON TOTAL
Sophomore Octavia Askew (Van Nuys, CA) had a big night in the
Toros loss to Cal Poly Pomona. In the first five minutes of the
second half the Toros went on a 14-5 run, with 12 of those points
scored by the forward. Askew was a perfect six of six from the
field during that span. Her career-high scoring is 18 points,
which occurred in the Toros loss to Sonoma State.
ALL BUT THREE
Freshman sensation Tameka Blue has scored in double-figures in
17 of the Toros 20 games this season.
FRESHMEN SCORING
Two Toro freshmen phenoms Teresa Cooper (Simi Valley, CA) and
Tameka Blue are leading the team in scoring. In fact, they are the
only players to be averaging double-figures on the season.
Together they have combined for 25.0 ppg, which is 42% of the
average team scoring of 60. ppg.
PERKINS IS BIG ON THE BOARDS...AGAIN
Nakeisha Perkins (Tarzana, CA) has been one of the top rebounders
throughout her career, and in her final season of collegiate
basketball, she is going to go out with a bang. So far, she is
leading the team with 7.1 rpg. She has brought down game-high
rebounds in 14 of the Toros 20 games this season.
QUEEN OF DISH
Tameka Blue is the queen of dish. She is leading the team with 92
assists so far on the season. She is averaging 4.5 assist per
game, which is the sixth best average in the CCAA.
HEAD COACH VAN GIRARD

Toros basketball program. In this time, Girard has posted a
185-191 record. He has led CSUDH to two consecutive CCAA
conference titles (1994-96), and has been named CCAA Coach of the
Year five times, including three in a row (1993-1996). Girard has
coached one All-American, two All-West Region players, three CCAA
MVP's and 29 all-conference players. His first win at the
collegiate coaching level came on November 25, 1988, when he led
CSUDH to a 82-68 victory against Incarnate Word.
