LOS ANGELES - Cal State L.A. rode a six-hit,
complete game gem by junior Chris Johnson and two home runs by
freshman Scott Moore to take a 14-3 decision in game one, and used
solid pitching and late inning heroics to secure a 7-4 victory in
game two, sweeping conference-foe Cal State Dominguez Hills on a
Thursday afternoon doubleheader at Reeder Field.
CSULA improves to 5-6, 4-2 CCAA, while CSUDH
falls to 6-6, 2-4 CCAA.
Game one saw the Golden Eagle bats explode,
scoring five runs in both the first and fifth innings. Moore and

center field wall and giving Cal State L.A. an early 5-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles also scored five in the fifth
inning, receiving key RBI hits from Moore, Das Jesson and
Balcazar, increasing their lead to a comfortable 10-1 margin, all
but putting game one away.
Johnson (1-0) scattered six hits and allowed
three runs (two unearned) in getting his first win of the season,
adding nine strikeouts and no walks in the complete game
masterpiece.
Moore blasted two home runs, drove in six RBIs,
scored four runs and reached base in every at-bat, finishing the
contest 4-for-4 with one walk. Jesson and Balcazar also had huge
games, going a combined 5-for-9 with six RBIs, four runs scored
and two HRs.
Rick Moore (1-2) took the loss for the Toros.
Game two saw CSUDH jump to a 4-1 lead. CSULA
cut the gap to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning, courtesy of
a Jeff Carroll RBI groundout and a Troy Young RBI single.
Cal State L.A. would take the lead for good in
its next at-bat, scoring three runs on five hits as Jesson,
Balcazar and Carroll each drove in a run with an RBI single.
Young, Tim Wilkerson, and Balcazar all had
three hits in the contest as CSULA matched its game one hit total
with 13 hits in game two.
Eric Fierro pitched 1.2 innings in relief,
allowing one unearned run in earning his first victory of the
season. Philip Springman hurled two scoreless innings to close out
the 7-4 victory, getting his second save of the year.
